Under the Radar?

Its pretty much any knife that doesn't lock down or with a heavy effort required to open. If it has a thumb stud and can be flipped open for example it would cover this.

Usually when an agency wants to change regulations they have to publish it and have to accept yea's or nays from people. The problem is unless you know about it, it can easily be hidden so no one knows about it until its too late. Probably you need to write to the legal section of the agency and the congressional committee that controls the agency to apply pressure.

For those that have permits to carry concealed weapons better check about knives because usually that means guns. Many states outlaw switchblades period and many only allow it for LEOs.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I've been carrying some sort of blade since I was probably 8. The only person that's ever been harmed in any capacity by one of my blades is myself. I would be lying if I said I don't feel safer having a scary looking blade at my side. Once again though, I generally stay out of the bad areas of town and have never had need to wield my blade in a threatening manner.

Where I find extreme fault with this is simply that knives are extremely necessary and required in many lines of work. Not for defense but just to do your job. What about razor blades and razor knives? When I was a mechanic, we went through entire boxes of razor blades in no time.

I need to read TFA, but from all that I'm hearing, this doesn't bode well for knives in general. On the other hand, I don't see how regulations could be put in place that would effectively kill off a huge industry. It just doesn't seem like a very intelligent thing to do when we're in the depths of a financial crisis.

If they get classified as weapons, wouldn't that make the 2nd amendement applicable?

No, and ...No.

The 2nd Amendment guarantees the individual the right to bear arms...but not even that is certain anymore. Up until recently (DC vs Heller) the District Columbia went untouched with their handgun ban simply because they were the capitol, and didn't consider themselves a state, thus not governed by the US Constitution. You couldn't carry pepper spray legally in D.C., thus ruling out knives, tasers, guns, clubs, or really any other type of object that could be brandished as a weapon.

Also, on the LEO comment: Military have more rights to carry a different variety of weapons than LEOs. I can carry a KA-BAR in my boot, a switchblade in my pocket, and a balisong on my waist band, and a cop cant say anything about it. Try catching a cop with a butterfly knife. Wont work out too well for him.

Which is ironic, because as knives they are definitely not the best choice of weapon. :shrug:

:OT indeed. I never got the banning of butterfly knives because they make crappy weapons unless someone is actually trained with one.

Anyway. Yeah I read about this. Seems to be a trend from my viewpoint.

It used to be that the states were the one place I knew of in the civilised world were you wouldn't get much grief over anything weapons related. I mean it's in your freaking constitution for goodness sake!

Lately it seems that more and more your constitution is being assaulted. Hardly a surprise but still quite shocking though.

YEs, Yes, Yes! Knives are weapons as are guns and should be protected as such. The term "arms" as used in the late 18th century would have included knives, swords, etc.

There are people and organizations who wish to turn the U.S. into a European type country(IM not bashing Europeans) where the government rules from the top down without the limits of a US style constitution. In a US style constitution all rights are bestowed to the people and power is supposed to come from the bottom and move upward with the peoples consent. The government in the US as a whole has become so large it has become an entity unto itself, not needing the consent of the people, Lincolns idea of Government of the people, by the people, for the people is dying; government for the sake of the government seems to be the new ideal. With the advent of homeland security and the fear mongering its just a matter of time before the US becomes a totalitarian state.

I don't want to see them banned, but I always figured it was a matter of time before those cam-style "assisted open", "hey we got around the switchblade laws" type knives were banned too. I don't own any because I prefer to open my blades under my own power, precision, and control, and in a fight I would gladly choose my spyderco with a thumb hole than one of the assisted openers.

But, they want to ban any knife that opens with one hand? Is that for sure?

That would be ridiculous. How does that type of thing work? Would they buy back all of my knives that don't meet their requirements, or would they be grandfathered in? Or am I SOL?

this is part of the stink about the Supreme Court is that some of these freaks want to look at foreign law as precedent to be applied here.

there will be no protection of knives under the 2nd for three reasons I can think of right off

If they meant to prove that ARMS meant GUNS in the 2nd then they would have to look at the original context.
In other words they would have to delve into the concept of Originalism

and in the process someone would see that the 14th applied to freed slaves, not every filthy thieving piece of scum who can sneak across the border and pop out a kid.

if someone really had some sense they might look into the GROSS GROSS misapplications of the Interstate Commerce Clause
and then we would have to pull back about 70 years of tyranny

the good news is that all the states have their own knife laws and this would be ripe for challenge
