Doc, there are lots of really useful apps that I like. For example, Sicboater set me up at the NC get together with an app that lets me get into the SRP chat from my phone. Very elementary for some of our propeller heads but good for me:). There are something like 65K apps available and that's just from the "legal" source, iTunes. If you get the phone shoot me a pm and we can talk apps based on what you are interested in.
I've had all three generations of iPhones and the newest one is really great. My only caveat has to do with your service in the Asheville area. As I recall, I wasn't always getting the best 3G coverage, but I could be wrong.
3 gs due here in Sept Bill so coming soon. The phone I am getting is the straight 3g without any letters so not the newest. Same phone David has I think.
The 3GS is a pretty good improvement over the 3G. If you are getting a subsidized deal I don't think the upcharge is that much.
If you are on ATT now, I could lend you an iPhone 3G to try out. I think you could just add the Phone data plan and drop it if you don't like the phone (the plan...not the phone:)).
Just don't move over to the shaving function....

+1. The weather channel app is exponentially better. I use it daily to check the weather on my ipod. I use a level program, and it's really great. When we moved into our new place and went to hang paintings, it got all of them level.
My favorite free apps are:
Dictionary!- a free dictionary
Pandora- the free internet radio website
Epocrates- a medical app with drug information that includes identification, interactions, and side effects.
Units- a unit converter for almost everything, from energy, temperature, speed, and volumetric flow.
Stanza- a free ebook program that lets you connect to pay and free book sources. I only use the free book sources and have found them to be very good. I just finished Ben Franklin's autobiography.
I've only ever bought 1 app from the app store, and it was Fantastic Contraption. It's an engineering and physics puzzle game that was worth the $4 or $5 I spent on it.
IRC - Mobile Colloquy $1.99
Pandora - Free
Ihandy level - Free
MMAtorch - Free (only if yoy're into MMA)
Mylite Flashlit - Free (even has a lighter function so you can swing your arms at a concent)
Ebay - Free
Paypal - Free
Facebook - Free
Planets - Free - Is that dot in the sky a star or a planet? Answer that question with this application. Discover when you can see your favorite planet, and where to look in the sky in relation to the stars.
Skype - Free
Get yourself an iphone. It's the next best thing after diet sodas. :)
I dont know what the pricing difference there is but I suspect that buying a 3G now and then hoping to get the 3GS in September will mean you will have to fork out a bundle. My mate did that though when the 3GS came out here though. He made the difference by selling his 3G on fleaBay.
There are some good and easy to read ebooks using iFlow. I'm currently reading Benjamin Button.
Also, assuming you use them- facebook, twitterfon, skype and IM+ lite (for msn chat, aol chat etc)
Papertoss, Paypal and Shazam is fun too. Shazam will identify songs you are hearing if you dont know what they are. But hey, thats just for fun.
If anyone knows of any travel apps for the UK i'd LOVE to hear about them. National Rail Enquiries seem to have the monopoly on rail at the moment. There are no apps for UK bs timetables. :boohoo:
EDIT: Oh and PS I love Google Earth.
anyone here tried mobile stogie?
I like Have 2 P if you have kids. I use stanley level. +1 on shazam and The weather channel. I also use the mapquest app as well as the built in google map. Map quest has restrants, hotels and fuel. The coolist is the coleman lantern app. Just a fancy flashlight app.

The 3Gs is very fast... much faster then the 3g and WAY faster then the original 2G. The new 3Gs is great. Besides being faster due to the processor upgrade but the video works very good.
Shazam is just too cool and I still get people at work that will ask me to "shazam" a song to see what it is.
The weather Channel app is great too..
If you use it a lot the battery will drain but as a phone only it will hold as well as the rest though its hard as it does so much. Huge screen which is good for watching movies on the go or whatever else your iPod does.
I think what really sells it beyond how well it works is all the free "stuff" available. Being able to copy and load your DVD"s, music and free podcasts and apps. But the email works great as does the internet and upgraded camera. last, the video recordings can be edited right on the phone and then uploaded to youtube or your mobile-me account if you have one or emailed as well as long as its size doesent exceed the bandwidth limit.
Heres a 5 second video I shot on July 4th.

And a still pic i took july 20th from the Yankee game and a closeup shot as well.
