Has KFC gone too far?

Now I grew up with Lee's Famous Recipe and later KFC to some degree but it was always in moderation. Usually 4th of July or a Picnic here or there.

Now though, and I apologize for this being a FOX News story, it seem that IMHO KFC has gone way over the limit.

Here is the Double Down. I AM NOT ADVOCATING that anyone go out and purchase this, in fact I would like to see people boycott KFC with this foolishness.

Two deep fried chicken breasts with bacon, cheese and colonel sauce, served with fries and a drink. The chicken acting as the bread. If you want a heart attack on a bun go get yourself Monticristo Sandwich, or a bacon and mayo sandwich, or a Big Carl.

If this foolishness continues, KFC should be required to have AEDs on site. Always remember that during periods of economic depression the general health of a population declines because they cannot afford better food to keep themselves healthy. This is just another nail in the coffin of the American heart.

When I was growing up in the 80's I remember stories of how old people who lived through the depression were all dying from various cancers caused by eating too much fat. Mmmmmm, bread and dripping.
I guess it's going to happen all over again.

I've eaten poultry (in fact I recently even ate some red meat). This "sandwich" is an abomination in the eyes of food snobs everywhere, though. How terrible that someone thought this was a good idea, and some pretty senior folks agreed.
I am, at the moment, pretty hungry, though and it sounds really good. I recognize that I at times am at odds with my desires.

Eh, I don't like the "government needs to regulate fast food chains to save us from ourselves" mentality. About the only regulation I think is valid here is that fast food chains shouldn't be allowed to market their products as "good for you", unless there's something on the menu that is considered as such.

I say this being a guy that hasn't bought any fast food from a chain in ten years. Zippo. I do consider it harmful and addictive, but so are cigs and I don't smoke those any more (15+ years).

Personal responsibility.

I agree with you that people go for the seemingly cheap fast food. Is it cheap though? A bag of dried peas or beans and dry brown rice are dirt cheap. I love making a big pot of soup and the whole pot costs less than one meal at a fast food chain. Nutritious food can be made for very very little money but people don't cook anymore.

In defense of chickens. They are not all dirty. Free range chickens when fed properly are as clean as grouse or duck. However mass produced chicken farms are not clean at all.

Since I can't afford the free range variety, I just hope and pray that the damage I have already done to my body evens out with the antibiotics and other nasties in the chicken.

I am starting a swing back to being a vegetarian/vegan. Now that my kids are getting older I think I can start making the switch back.

After eating one of those babies, do NOT wipe the grease off of your chin! Smear it all over you face, that rendered fat makes an excellent tallow pre-shave oil! Run to the bathroom right there at KFC, lock the door, whip out your razor, and enjoy the best shave of your life!

Agreed. If cleaned properly, chicken is no less clean than any other animal. I grew up eating our home raised poultry and my parents still raise meat birds and use only eggs from their own hens. My Dad jokingly calls it "harvesting" chickens now rather than butchering them to make fun of political correctness which is pervasive in our world. I'm the gutter when we do "harvest" the chickens. To fill our freezer with fresh "organic" chicken a few times each year, being up to my forearm in chicken body cavities for a half a day is a small price to pay! The flavor of the free range home raised chicken is incomparable.

Exactly! Although they do have one of those rubber fingered wheel plucker machines, but still. Late Fall in Minnesota can be cold in the morning. My hands are warm and cozy in the guts, while the pluckers hands are wet and cold.:)

free run local chickens and beef is the way to go for sure!

i am scared that the government will soon make it illegal though (just like raw milk) by listening to big business lobbyist who twist some facts around their own agenda of controlling all food. why can't i choose to buy raw milk? i know the "risk" and yet if a farmer were caught he would face huge fines. that is against my rights as far as i am concerned. i can smoke and drink myself to death but what if raw milk made me sick? seriously Ontario.

I know in the U.S. small animal farms have been concerned of the talk for some years now of registering every animal in the U.S. in some form or another. There are requirements and restrictions talked about that could in theory, from what I recall reading, make it prohibitive for a small farmer or even a family raising their own animals for consumption from doing so. So, who knows, your concern may not be too far off base.

Correct. I forget the temp, but we get a huge pot of water hot using a propane burner. Once the temp is stabilized and the decapitated chickens are ready for dipping (after they've stopped flopping around and have more or less bled out), they're dunked into the hot water and kept there for a minute or so. After doing this, the majority of the feathers pull right out without much effort. The key is to get the water hot enough to make a difference but not so hot that it starts to cook the skin. The birds are then plunged into ice cold water and kept in the cold water (changed frequently) for a few hours prior to the freezer.


In Minnesota, apparently a person can raise and sell up to 1,000 dressed birds per year to the public without having to comply with USDA regs or have the birds processed in a USDA facility. To do this a person can NOT sell wholesale where the birds would be resold; the person must sell directly to the public. We've talked about how with the high cost of free range chicken, it could be a decent income producing side job to have.

as some one who occasionally indulges in fast food, I guess the argument here is everything in moderation. The trouble is, no one seems to do that any more. It's actually incredible what some people do to their bodies.

I have eaten them. One they are really good, two who cares that is an indulgence had every once in a while, and three nothing is better when your drunk at 3 a.m. than a Captain Crunch doughnut.
