I'm Glad I'm on the Downhill Side of This Life

We are Americans - We are not supposed to "ban" things. They're going to put a ban on smoking in bars/resturants in Virginia. How could this happen? Maryland flipped along time ago. DC crapped out soon after. But my sweet Virginia?!! Virginia with the Marlboro Factory just down 95? WTF?! I love my Ciggy's, Cigars, and Chew, and I understand if a man owns something he has a right to say what can go on there. But as for the bars, they've gone too far on this "ban" $hit. And as for Saudi-ing the prices on Ciggy's to 5 and 6 bucks a pack. It's just BS. I Remember the great times of being able to smoke where ever I want for a 1.25$ a pack. Bill Clinton killed that era.

I have smoked all my life and like the no smoking in restaurants, nothing worse than trying to enjoy a good meal while sitting at a table surrounded by chain smokers.

Well to tell you the truth I understand non-smokers not wanting to be subjected to breathing and smelling the noxious fumes of cigs and what have you. When I quit cigs in 2000 I continued to smoke my tobacco pipes. Only then did I begin to realize that cigarettes stink. I can't stand the aroma but I had to quit before I realized how foul smelling they are to non cigarette smokers.

However, that said, I am still a smoker and having grown up when we smokers were, if not a majority, a substantial part of the population and at least tolerated. I have come to accept not being able to smoke in restaurants, even in most public places .... but in the home . Geez ! Like I said in the OP. I'm glad I'm on the short side of this life with more behind me than ahead of me. :beer2:

I am pro-smokers' rights but if I lived in an apartment and the smell of smoke permeated the walls and stunk up my place I would be livid. Have you ever been incorrectly checked into a hotel room where the previous occupant smoked their brains out? By the time you leave, you and everything you own will smell like crap.

So, as a smoker, let me say that as long as my smoking does not directly affect you (and this does NOT include open-air / outside), then leave me the hell alone.

Be sensible and kick the habit before you kick the bucket.

I've never been sensible before so why start now ? Besides, if it ain't that it'll be something else....:D Thanks for the thought though.

You know what's interesting is smokers really don't notice the smell.

I imagine there are plenty of smokers who wouldn't have a second's thought about complaining about late night loud music, kids messing around on loud bikes or in loud cars, get annoyed at that bloke on the phone in the cinema or the couple making out right infront of their kids . . . well, you get the idea.

See where I'm coming from? As someone who really doesn't give a damn either way, but appreciates both sides of the argument.

As a smoker it is hard to pick up on the scent of tobacco smoke. As a pipe smoker I can smell cigarette smoke but not my pipe smoke.

Noise OTOH, I would like to have an RPG for those cars with the booming bass that vibrates through other people's cars. Those rude SOBs ought to be shot. :gwh:

Kees is absolutely right; better yet: everything that is harmful should be banned. People will never be wise enough to not do what what may harm them - so make it illegal and the temptation is removed or the harmers-to-self are hanged.
