My father was the same, but by the time i was 10, he didn`t need to.
"just wait till your father finds out" from my mother or "were sending a letter home" from a teacher, either of those phrases was enough to have me in floods of tears and hiding in my wardrobe when i herd my dad come home.

I can`t remember a time past the age of 7 or 8 when my dad hit me but the fear was always there when i`d done somthing wrong.

And i have grown up a relativly well ajusted young man, I`m polite courtious, and respectfull. I work hard and try to get through life by upsetting the minimum amount of people.
my one flaw is that i can`t spell or use punctuation, But hey i`m dyslexic

It is sad and very common these days that some people are just totally lost in being a parent for their children or then they just doesn't care. Too many kids grow without proper limits and far too much television and internet.

My wife works at the psychiatric care for children and she surely has to witness almost every day this kind of behavior and worse.
When parents get too tired of their daily worries or have any other kinds of problems in their life it reflects into their children as well.

It is the sign of these times. I fear it is getting worse. When children have no decent role model of adult behavior then how can they in time raise their own children?

I'd expect the townfolk of "Yorkshite" to know some profanity at a young age :p

Look at what they are exposed to on TV, movies and especially the internet ... unless they are supervised. There has been a definite coarsening of the culture over the course of my 61 years. Look at the popularity of "The Sopranos".

I've seen critics refer to it as the 'best' TV series ever made. Murder, rape, foul language abounding and the glorification of criminals and their lifestyle. I've read that we can judge a society by their art .... historically speaking that is. Where does that leave us ?

That is one reason why i do not watch much TV these days. Of thousands of crap series there is it is really hard to find single one that would show 'normal' life interesting. It is too easy for the kids with no guidance or sense of realism to get confused or to take these shows too seriously.

I'm not for any kind of censorship either. It is just that young kids need adults to explain them things. To spend time with them. Not just to leave them on their own.

From what I have seen, the problem is this world of self help books, doctor phils, and oprahs which are causing the problems. When my cousin was born, my Aunt attempted to raise my cousin in the fashion dictated in these crack pot books. "Don't call your child, or your childs' actions bad, they may begin to believe they are bad people. Call them naughty" " Never hit your child" "time outs should be short, and you the parent should sit in the room with the child and discuss the problem with them"

What a load of bull. I'm not saying that kids should get beat to a pulp, but on the rare occasions when I was so bad that my parents had to get physical, a few smacks across my bumb really made me think about what I had done.

The time outs my cousin got were a joke. She wouldn't be in that room for more then a minute before my Aunt went in and apologized. When I got a time out, I sat in the corner for 45 minutes, which was enough time for me to realize that bad behavior results in unsavory consequences.

How did it all end up you ask? My cousin is constantly in trouble, reigning havock through the house.

I work three jobs, have great credit, pay my bills, keep my girlfriend happy, well I think I do at least.

Parents need to stop being affraid of screwing their kids up. Lay down some rules and guidelines, because as many have said before, the home and our parents teach us the fundementals of the world at large.

You clearly should have beaten the child and washed its mouth out with soap.

I'm sure its parents are simply low-lives and it picked up that sort of language from them.

I disagree... Parents need to be MORE afraid of screwing their kids up, and realize that NOT punishing them IS what's screwing them up.

I agree with everything else you said... But kids have to start getting hit >.<

I was hit, I am not messed up -outside of personality quirks that are native to me, not produced by environment- and I am actually quite proud to say my father disciplined me well, so I can behave well/respectably. And I will do the same to my kid.

Just my feelings though
