Methinks he was a bit tongue in cheek and/or confused..
1) John the Baptist was not the apostle John...
2)I grew up baptist, common quote is something along the lines of "it's not a religion, it's a relationship"... so his comment was backwards, it should have been the only denomination that's not a religion... however I've heard this type of comment (and agree with it) in many non-baptist settings.

John (the baptist) was not a Baptist. He was the son of a Jewish priest named Zechariah. He was also the prophet for told in the book of Isaiah.Quote:

The apostle John was not a Baptist he was Jewish & the youngest of the Apostles and the one charged at the cross to take care of Jesus' mother.
