He was one tough old Bird er...Byrd.
Rest In peace pork man.
Did you notice that he was in office over 50 years !!!!!
Say what you will about the man, but he took care of the folks back home.
he was the oldest living welfare recipient.
It would be hard for me to believe that someone was for the working man when they never worked themselves. He never had a real job. He never had to worry about paying his rent, he never had to stand in line at wal mart and hope that the person behind him didn't get close enough to see that he was using an EBT card. He never had to walk to the unemployment office. He never had to stand in church Sunday after Sunday and get asked "How's the job search going? ever thought about going back in the Army?" He never had to worry about his kids being picked on for getting a reduced lunch at school. He never had to worry about college loans.Quote:
Now that Sen. Byrd, who apparently never held a real job, has assumed room temperature, I hope Obama says something nice about his fellow state-critter, so that we can do a blogpost with the headline FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT EULOGIZES KLANSMAN.” Stephan Kinsella StephanKinsella.com — Austro-Anarchist Libertarian Legal Theory
This guy lived in a fantasy world where he was the king. Being in congress longer than anyone means that he took more of your money, just for his salary, than any other mobster in DC.
Good riddance I say.
Its a memorial thread guys, feel free to chop him to bits on another thread.
It speaks volumes that he was able to admit his mistakes with such sincerity that his constituents continued to elect him.
Seems like a lot of people who don't know what they're talking about want to go to the keyboard and hit the enter key before getting their facts straight. Thanks for that Ron.
As a matter of fact if it had been up to Senator Byrd we wouldn't be in Iraq or Afghanistan at all. Like a lot of people from his place and time he was bigoted but he changed with the times and admitted he had been wrong and apologized for it. It is a shame that the only man in the senate who stood up to the last administration is gone.
He was atleast man enough to own up to his mistakes. If only the rest of the Senators could be so introspective.
I have moved one post, and another that had quoted it, as Completely Inappropriate for SRP standards!!!
Although you are able to voice you opinion, it had better stay civil...
One and only warning here ..
I did some searching on-line and couldn't find any verifiable sources to say that he ever held any type of private work. The citation in wikipedia for that statement actually cites his school attendance, political timeline etc. There is no source for him holding down a private job.
However, if he ever did have a private job as wikipedia states, having 3 jobs in less than 5 years cannot overshadow almost 50 years in the senate.
I do appreciate his opposition to DHS and the wars.
EDIT: Here is a very good transcription of Sen. Byrd's floor remarks in opposition to the war in Iraq.

Desdinova we have given 1 week...
Let me know and we can make it permanent, your choice
Again keep it civil...
If you can't then don't hit submit
I personally find it very sad to be banning a member over a Conversation thread, this sub-forum is for Gentlemanly discussion only, we are a Straight Razor Forum first....
