parting your hair on the right or the the left?

so this may seem a stupid topic.. but i figured i'd have a better chance of landing a gentlemanly response here than from anyone i know in real life.

so i've always worn a side part on the left and had a stupid wavey curl on my right side that seems to grow longer than the rest of the hair on my head and never sits like it should.. i've always hated it.. then i'm watching my favourite television show.. (leave it to beaver) and i realize that ward's hair isn't parted.. but seems to be combed back from right towards the left.. and it gets me thinking.. cary grant, johnny depp, tom cruise, andy defresne.. all parted on the right..

so i give it a try and blam! my hair parts perfectly on the right and every hair goes perfectly in place as if it was grown specifically for the right side part..

it just feels odd though.. is there standard behind this? does a right side part imply i'm a shandy drinker or something?

i have a feeling i know what your responses will read.. had to give it a shot anyway...

My barber always asks so I suspect the choice is

Well i am bald so i don't part my hair, but i think its a personal thing.

Hair? I think I can almost remember when I had some to part!

My current parting is about 4" wide and straight down the middle...

In my younger days I used to switch from day to day and wait to see if people noticed. I'd get some strange looks.

well after some serious research today.. it comes down to this.. traditionally.. the left was for men and the right was for women.. some women found that parting their hair on the left made for more success in predominantly male careers... most men of stature parted their hair on the left except for the most eccentric..

most of this is forgotten by todays standards so it's no big deal.. and the rule can always be broken depending on which way your hair grows or the direction of your broken nose :)

as for me.. my hair combs perfect on the right.. but i feel awkward.. perhaps i need a flattop.

Ever since I actually started styling my hair at all I've parted on the left, or at least combed me bangs to the right. I never really thought about why, it just seems natural. It may be because that was when I rocked the emo bangs and my left eye is my dominant eye, so it was to make it so my other eye was covered. Now my hair's been trained to go that way and just does it on it's own.

I've also experimented (in the privacy of my home away from judging eyes, haha) with parting on the right, and it works ok, but like you said it just doesn't feel natural.

That my friend, is such b******t. It reminds me of that "don't pierce your right ear because only gay guys wear earrings in their right ear". I have both pierced...so that makes me bi? No. I say whatever looks best on you!

Please don't curse. Using asterisks to dot out the letters really doesn't make it better, despite what people say. If everyone can read it by inference, then writing a word with letters blinked out is the same as just writing it without the asterisks.

Your point is valid, but since this is a gentlemanly forum where we can have a conversation like civilized (wo)men, profanity is not required to bring the message across.

I used to part my hair on the left when I was about 10 years old and it was the more fashionable way to do things. Now that I am older and really don't care about fashion, and while I still have some hair left to do it with, I brush it straight back and tie it off in a poney tail...Oh yeah, and I only have my left ear pierced as anything more is just questionable in a male :):medvl:.

I'm with Bruno.Stopped caring about style long ago.Bought myself a clipper for about $25 and have been cutting my own hair for about 10 years.Snap on the #3 guard and buzz it all off to the same length.The money I save on haircuts,I spend on razors and such. :D :D

:) Perhaps you should try "Dapper Dan" products. Then you can go around saying "I'm a Dapper Dan man".

I have mine pretty short as well, so I just bung a bit of wax in it and give it a rub. Its the static electricity look..! :D

I dont have it in that Eraserhead style, but it is kinda spiky.

Hair should be parted where it wants to part. For the vast majority this is on the left. For me, it is on the right and that is how I have done it for the past 55 years. As with shaving, do what is natural, not what some "expert" says you should be doing.

Like many, I've had a crewcut for as long as I can remember. As for a parting, well if you have enough hair, anywhere but the centre.

Same here. I've used hair clipper for years. At first my wife cut my hair but nowadays i do it myself.

When i was cutting hair i would try to get the patrons to part it at it's natural part if there was one.
After a shampoo just comb wet hair straight back and the give it a little push and it will show it's natural parting.
Myself i comb straight back.

I was discussing this with my uncle who has been a stylist for about 35 years (despite still being 25 years old) and writes a hair help column for a national publication. He said if people must part their hair they should occasionally switch to reduce stresses on the hair follicle. His recommendation is to not use combs just fingers or a very wide tooth gape. He also says that the wax and petroleum based hair products used in that style of hair don't allow the hair to breathe instead look for a water-based product they also allow for easy removal and no product flaking throughout the day. He put me on framesi brand hair products.

I don't have a crew cut as such, but it's fairly short, so no parting needed.

I find parting is such sweet sorrow.

update.. i just feel too odd with my hair parted on the right.. i'm going back to the left and just caking more brylcreem into the cowlick on the right side.

My Dad used to use a dog brush. Said it massaged
his scalp best. He had a full head of hair in his 80's
so perhaps there is something to it.

There are brushes a lot like the one he used in the
fancy hair-stuff isle at the local pharmacy.
