Speaking of Firewalls, etc...... Every week I get numerours requests to my website for advice, product questions, etc..... only to have my replies returned because of their firewall, spam blocker, etc..... has rejected it.
The potential customer probaly thinks I have terible customer service as I didn;t reply to their questions.
When contacting any vendor, do think about your settings if you hope to get a reply.

I always double-check my antispam folder b/c of that. Never lost an e-mail so far :)
I know this is REALLY late (the original post done on my birthday). I honestly don't know HOW I missed this thread. Hope it's not too late.
If you just ABSOLUTELY REFUSE to make a wise choise and switch to linux ;), here's a good guide that always works when combined with careful browsing and email use.
For anyone's interest here's what I do on 95% of the home Windoze systems I work on, whether they have a paid package or not. ALL of this is free and all of this can be downloaded at http://www.majorgeeks.com under the appropriate subject link (download from georgia, it's faster)

Avg Free edition
Spyware/Adware
Adaware Personal SE
Spybot search and destroy
Spywareblasster
Unless you're using AOL or some "superhelpful" ISP or using spamblockers none of these should affect your emails. Remember, manual updates and scans on the spyware/adware atleast every 2 weeks.
If you're using a router that assigns IP addresses you'll want to configure an advanced rule in sygate to allow local traffic. You'll also have to click "remember answer" and "yes" on every application's first attempt at accessing the internet but only if you're sure you want it to.
On Spybot, Unless you're an advanced user/techie DON'T install teatime with the installation. It is great added protection but will only confuse the average user.
an example of an advanced rule would be to give it a name of "home" and on tab 2 "allow" traffic, select "subnet" and let's say your router assigns ip addresses in the 192.168.X.X range. 3rd number set may be a zero or 1 or something else but you can configure subnet 192.168.255.255 with subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 and it will be good for all of those, which is the majority of linksys, dlink, and netgear routers.

I wanted to see what you are still using and if anything else has come out you like better? My new laptop will be here tomorrow. Once I get the McAfee off of it what should I put back on for firewall/spyware/antivirus?

Love AVG free, used constantly for years, never infected. Use a router, use windows firewall ---be sure to give your network a real password and be sure to thoroughly clean that pesky Norton out of your machine. Use a stand alone uninstaller like Revo (free) and take the uninstallation as deep as it will go.
