Need help finding awesome hair product/pomade for my "Crosstown Fade!"

I have used several different pomades and wax products over the years in my hair, since I usually "pomp" it back in the crosstown fade type look. The guy that cuts my hair does an amazing job with the old school style cuts, but since my hair is very long, thick, and straight, some of the products just won't hold my hair back very well. However, I don't like pomades that are too greasy or make your hair feel too hard and "crunchy" the way gels or something like that would.

If anyone has some suggestions on good pomades or products for this style hair-do, please help me out!!! I live in Nashville and play in a Rockabilly band, so if anybody lives here or ever comes to visit, come check us out down at Robert's Honky Tonk downtown or any of the other venues around town! We are on Capitol, so go on tour regularly as well, so hope to maybe see some of you out swingin' the night away!

well.. "greasy" is a relative term.. i personally use brylcreem and don't consider it greasy in comparison to some of the other products i have used.. i personally don't like anything too heavy or stiff.. so if i need something with a little more hold than brylcreem.. i turn to royal crown..

a real popular one these days is layrite.. the moto is "holds like a wax, washes out like a gel"

Ironically, since I lived in Newport Beach for several years and got my hair cut by Donnie Hawley for a few years, I randomly recalled earlier after posting this that he had his own line of pomades for these types of haircuts!

So, I already ordered the original lay-rite pomade minutes after posting this thread earlier today! I forgot how great and cheap it is, and had completely forgotten about his pomades! That's why I tried to delete this thread, since there isn't much point to it anymore, but it wouldn't let me...

Thanks for the suggestion, and you are right on! Lay-Rite rinses out well, holds well, and isn't too nasty and greasy, as well as annoyingly stiff!

Im a barber that wears a pomp. I make my own pomade that we sell at the shop and i use layrite. Love the stuff.

I'm a HairDresser. Try Shaving cream. Lather some up and apply. I use it all the time. Trust me.

i hear shaving cream is often used in cutting flattops..

also.. there's nothing wrong with the classic vasoline.. rudolph vasolino style!

don't use murrays unless you have a strong degreaser for later

What kind of shave cream, canned goo?

from what i was told.. the beard busting barbasol does the trick just fine.

Layrite is the only way to go! Ive used it for over 4yrs now to style my pomp and love it! Donny Hawley is "the man" when it comes to old school cuts. I had the pleasure of him cutting my hair with a straight when he came to a tattoo show up here in Calgary a couple of years ago.

lay-rite is good stuff.. but i've got to let the ladies run their fingers through.. and for that.. brylcreem is the way to go.

i do enjoy the smell of lay-rite.. and black and white smells great too... much harder to find though...

What kind of shaving cream is good to use?? Like a gel that turns to foam, or one that comes out of the can already as a foam?? Or could I even use, for example, my T and F "concentrated" cream in the tub, which obviously would have to be whipped up to create a lather--does it need to be a thick lather, or could I try it right out of the tub?

I am just wondering what the shaving cream will do for my hair and if it washes out easily, etc, etc???

I have used the original layrite before many times, and with the perfect amount, my ladies have no problems running their hands through my hair!!! It's all about the amount of water in your hair when you apply it. It doesn't make my hair crunchy feeling or hard, since my hair is so thick, heavy, and stick straight! However, I heard the super hold layrite causes your hair to not even move in a tornado! LOL. That's too much hold and hard feeling hair for me!

The only brylcreem I could find on thegreaseshop.com was the "Far East" version in the red and white tub?? Is that what you guys had recommended? Or is their another U.S. one that's better? It said that it was different from the US Brylcreem in that it's shinier....however, they didn't carry the USA version, just the "Far East Brylcreem"

i use the u.s. version in the tube.. it can be found at almost any drugstore.. cvs, rite aid, walgreens...

the far east version has more hold and smells different. i like the far east version better.. but i go through the stuff so fast.. i save money using the u.s. stuff.

The aerosol canned stuff(Colgate.etc.) is usually alcohol based, so these types will have a far more drying effect on the hair, making the hair still malleable but not slick, but hey, that sounds to me like what you want. The green gel stuff and the tube creams will just gum up and will actually lather up in your wet hair, and also be aware that any heavy fragranced creams can some times smell odd after a few hours. Of course, Your Milage May Vary, all depending on your hair texture and desired look. But the way you described your hair it could very well work for you. I would recommend using the canned $1.99 Colgate, and putting it in clean wet hair, airdry or blowdry. If you feel inclined and it works out for you and looks cool, would you post some pics here, I'd like to see it.:

I picked up some Brylcreem (US version) at Walgreen's and really like it! It's definitely nice for when I do a more casual pomp that is a bit messier and more "piecie," if you will. Can you tell me more specifically what you like about the Far East version vs. the US Brylcreem??

I like having the Brylcreem around too because it is SO DIRT CHEAP--I can get it at Dollar General up the street, and since I tend to go through the Layrite rather quickly it helps break up having to make that purchase as often. The Layrite is only $15, plus $3 shipping, which is pretty damn cheap, especially compared to some of the salon B.S. that is sold for $40 a tub, but a single tub of Layrite only lasts me 2-3 mos. give or take...

I tried some Barbasol shaving cream, and liked it fine--it essentially left my hair feeling very much like the US Brylcreem does! So, I prefer just using the BC since it lasts longer in my hair vs. the shaving cream...

What is a Fade cut? Is the xtown version different from the regular?

Have heard the term fade, but have no idea "What it Is".

I bought some Murray's just for the hell of it, since a lot of "greaser" types in Nashville recommended it to me since I have so much hair to deal with. I said, it doesn't ever really wash out though, huh? Two different people responded by simply saying they didn't want it to wash out! Hehe! Fair enough, makes sense... However, many people hate Murray's and I can see their point--it has only three ingredients; petrolatum, mineral oil, and fragrance, so obviously it is going to hold VERY WELL but clearly not come out of one's hair without some degree of effort. I don't like the idea of it clogging up my hair folicles either.

I figured for $1.25 a can at the Dollar General though, I could invest in some whether I liked it or not. LOL! I couldn't believe the price on it; the cheap can surely costs more than the product. It does smell very good though! It's simplicity has inspired me to make my own pomade, so we shall see how that goes...I will post up after making some and trying it. One guy posted earlier that he makes his own pomade as well, and also loves Layrite, which is my personal favorite. If you read this, let me know what you put in your homemade grease and the best way to get it all blended together well. Thanks!!

i've mixed pomades in the past.. but never brewed any from scratch.. another good and cheap option is vasoline.

Yeah, I've tried vaseline in the past, and it's even harder to get out of my hair than Murray's I think! LOL. It gives a killer shine to your hair though...however, I like that the Layrite pomade has the perfect amount of sheen to it. Also, I have been using the Hawleywood's Grooming Spray along with their Layrite, and it's a perfect combo for my hair. It's not overkill with regard to the sheen, and looks very nice and holds great! Plus after trying the Murray's, I appreciate how the Layrite doesn't build up in your hair and on your scalp. It's difficult just getting the Murray's off your hands, let alone out of my thick hair. That stuff is as hard as a rock in the can...so it's essentially good smelling vaseline on steroids!!!
