well, i have my tech license, havent used it much in a while, and havent felt the need to upgrade, callsign is kc8wkf, but like i stated, i havent been on air in a while, need to get a new antenna for my 2mtr, but havent spent the money as of yet. never got into ares i am sorry to say
I have thought about it...Is it an expensive hobby? I did a lot of radio work back in the day with the old PRC 77's and fild expedient antennas. I had a blast getting signal when no one else could...Since then though everyoe has move to freq hopping an Tacsats....Not as much fun..
Just got back from the local radio club not 20 minutes ago. I'm looking into getting a first time licence. So, no, I'm not a member of ARES and I have no idea what you're talking about at this stage anyway. :) Listened to a talk on Dayton Hamfest at the club...My god, it's huge what they do there.

it can be expensive, but you can find deals at hamfest, not only the big ones like Dayton, but in the smaller ones as well. Also dealers will offer discounts on new rigs at hamfest, but the individuals in the flea market portion will usually have some decent bargains.
Then you might love HAM radio. No it could be very basic, lots of "silent keys" that end up leaving behind very nice radios, attenas, you already know that can be done with a wire. Go for it, but at least get a general class this way you can play with all the bands and use some real power.
