Hat etiquette

Gentlemen,

I have recently noticed a big resurgence in the popularity of hats (not baseball hats mind you). I have picked up a straw fedora while I was on holidays in Hawaii this spring and was wondering when and where I should or should not be wearing it. I've tried searching the internets for information, but wasn't able to find much that was of any use. I really only have one question.

When wearing a non-baseball style hat, do I remove my hat when going indoors?

I hope someone here can shed some light on this for me.

I don't know. Rules of etiquette have changed so drastically during my lifetime that wearing hats indoors by males is commonplace--even in classrooms.

As for me, I always remove my hat indoors, regardless of the type--unless I'm in an indoor sports arena.

Same here....indoors, no hats. No matter what!

I was brought up with the notion that it's rude to wear a had indoors.

When I was in the airforce head dress always came off indoors. Other than that I can't think of any particular advice.

I will tip my hat brim to people I know when I see them but there's no need to doff your hat.

And that's about all I've got on hat etiquette. :)

If memory serves me, I believe the proper etiquette forhats indoors is to take them off in private residences and resteraunts. They can be worn in public indoor facilities such as banksl airport/train stations and hotel lobbies, but they must be taken off when entering an elevator, train or airplane. I'm most likely missing things but this is a good start.

i always remove the hat indoors.. unless it's an overly public building.. like train station or something.. also.. i think it's safe to keep your hat on in elevators.

Of course etiquette varies from generation to generation, but I like the traditional practices.
