If you should end up in the southern San Francisco bay area then check out the Los Altos Rod and Gun Club range(www.losaltosrodandgunclub.com). I work there a couple Sundays each month. Fyi, from October through April bring cold/wet weather clothing as the weather can be unpredictable.

We have a fair amount of it... it just seems like it's getting harder to find places to shoot/hunt unless you or your family own the land. My grandfather had 160 acres (1/2 mile x 1/2 mile) and we used to shoot there all the time. After he died it was divided up between the three kids. My parents got the part that doesn't have a good backstop anywhere. Go figure.
In Houston, I don't know of anywhere to do the cans but there are three good ranges.
(1) American Shooting Center (outdoors and also has skeet/trap range)
(2) Phil Oxley's Impact Zone (usually go with a member but not a bad place)
(3) Top Gun (indoor range, lots of training classes in the evening)
Texas is pretty good about handguns. So what do you travel with?
Also, Houston is the home base for Comp-Tac Holsters and also Brian Hoffner's Holsters. Both Greg (owner of Comp-Tac and Brian (owner of Hoffner's) shoot and conduct classes at Top Gun.
If you are in the DFW Metroplex, and preferably on the *right* side of the Trinity (that would be the Fort Worth side) - I would be more than happy to go shooting, as I rarely have to have an excuse to do that...
We have two outdoor ranges nearby, and a slew of indoor ranges too that I haunt. Nothing spectacular, one outdoor range is positively rustic, the other is big and overused, all are fun and a good place to spend $100 in bullets.

If you're ever in the south, there is one near me in the upstate of SC. It's nothing fancy, just a state Dept. of Natural Resources outdoor range. But while it's out in the sticks, it's easy to get to and is free, and well-maintained. Covered benches at the rifle range, I don't know about the pistol range (I don't have a handgun yet, just long guns).
Okay, No one from Denver has chimed in yet.
If you ever get to the mile high city, there is a great range in Cherry Creek State Park, (which is literally right across the street from me) which accommodates pistols, rifles, and shotguns. There are ATA trap ranges, throw your own trap ranges, and a pattern board for shotguns. you have to pay a park entrance fee, and the range fee, but (not including ammo) you can get out of there for about $20.
