I'll second that call to duty
Indeed, I will be on election duty in an undisclosed South Jersey location, enforcing the election laws and all that good stuff. I just have to leave home early enough to make sure that *I* can vote.
I shoulda requested an absentee ballot. :(
Here's a cute little fact from the time of Milosevic that Josh/Bill are going to appreciate:
The only rural riding where the Socialist Party of Serbia did not win a seat was in my dad's home-town. Coincidently, it was the only riding where the ballot boxes were guarded by volunteers with hunting rifles. Too bad for you guys that they didn't do it in Florida lol.
Or Illinois the second time.Quote:

Amusing? Yes! Outrageous? Considering the fact that there were some irregularities, I'm not so sure that EU shouldn't have sent a few people to make sure the elections were truly democratic.Quote:

Fortunately I was able to take advantage of the 'early voting' in my state and voted last Saturday at the polling place they set up in the mall. There wasn't a line at noon, so it couldn't have been much more convenient. They also were open Sunday to catch the church crowd.

Outrageous because it suggests that somehow America needs it's elections monitored like its some kind of banana republic trying to throw a dictator out of power. There were problems, but they were mostly due to stupidity (both on the part of the government and the voters), not any sort of corruption or election rigging that needs to be "monitored".Quote:

Ok...
Randy suggested we all get out and vote tomorrow. That's cool. He didn't make a referendum for either party, which was also cool. Vote for whoever you want that you think will do a good job... either party.
But, If I see one more stupid and ignorant comment like this...
I will come unglued and I will jump dead in the middle of your chest no matter who the f*** you are. It's not funny. Turn another site into a Republican bashing dance. If you do it here, I'm going to say something back. My life is too short to put up with bullshit when I don't have to. I don't take military bashing or President Bush bashing lightly. I'm here for razors and razor talk. I know some of you have different political views and I don't care. But I am tired of the public insults to my country and my President and not responding to them. I'm letting you know now that I will not be polite any longer. Why would I want to come here just to get pissed off over asshole statements? I can watch ABC, NBC, CBS, or CNN to do that.Quote:

Bill, I wasn't trying to insult the president or the military with this comment. Just pointing out the fact that there WAS a voting controversy in a very narrow presidential race.
There was an obvious flaw in the voting process, which is an affront to democracy. As an American I would have thought that you were pro-democratic (referring to the system, not the party) and thus wished it to run flawlessly.
I appreciate everyone's input into this thread. As Bill noted, I did not suggest any party affiliation, or suggest any particulars. Just vote. It's a right that so many have fought for, and died for. Voice your opinion by voting. It's not about whether we agree about candidates or parties...it's about doing our civil duty as U.S. Citizens. I have a lot of co-workers who have told me "I'm not voting blah blah blah. It's my way of making a decision". I'm reminded of the great movie line..."stupid is as stupid does".

Well said as usual Bill, and thanks for saying it. That stuff belongs on sites that are devoted to it - not here where it will only cause discord.
Because you say so? Leave it alone Ilija. You are starting to piss me off. Take that shit to your choir on the communist web sites where it belongs. It's not funny, it's not true, and you are out of line.Quote:

I believe theres a wise old saying that rings true here "Never discuss Politics or Religion in polite company"
To my mind this has always been a friendly society, disagreements/different points of view, yes, but always polite & friendly.
Lets agree to leave the politics to the politicians.
Hope I don't sound condascending, I certainly don't mean to be. Lets not allow politics to spoil our likeminded enjoyment .
Cheers

So can I .. boy. I often find it amazing that two folks as different as you and I are on some things, Bill can see so eye to eye on others. People are funny animals. Just when I think I've got 'em figured they always do something to surprise me.Quote:

Even though at times I don't feel it makes a difference. It is my right and I have voted in every election since I was 18. ( Long time ago:D ) It is your civic duty.
I choose to vote only when I believe in the party's platform or I find another one distasteful enough to be forced to vote for "the other guy." I rarely skip federal or provincial elections but I've only voted once on the municipal level.
Alex, just because you have a right doesn't mean you HAVE TO use it under any circumstances. People should get educated on the party platforms and their track record in keeping promises before going to the polls. Otherwise they allow inertia or blind luck to run their country.
I agree with Firestart -
Along with the right and privilege of voting comes the responsibility of educating oneself on the issues upon which you cast your vote. An uninformed voter can be very dangerous.
True. But with power (in this case the power to vote) comes responsibility. One is personally responsible to got oneself educated on the voting system and the parties. Once that is done you can always chose not to vote. But in most cases not chosing to vote simplt gives more power to the majority. I usually vote in order to create a balance in the government. I think it's a lot more dangerous to have one single large party in power than a lot of small ones.
Alex, just because the majority is winning it doesn't mean that it's not right. (just an observation) What I don't like about modern party systems is that member of the party are "strongly encouraged" to vote as they are directed in support of their party. That's something I REALLY hated about communism. Representatives should vote according to their principles, which (ideally) represent their ridings' principles.
I think you misunderstand me.
In my opinion there are very littl people in politics that are either "right" or even "honest". Thus in most political situations (at least in my country) I think moderation is what I'm looking for. I wouldn't mind people "rocking the boat" as long as they wee rockin it in the right way.
