The way I see it, if you're sick of these shows, don't watch. Even better, turn off the tv entirely and pick up a book.:)
Absolutely! And if you think you have it bad in the US, consider us poor buggers in Australia with only 1/10th the gene pool (or whatever it is). After about 2 seasons we really got down to the dregs in terms of contestants IMO.
To top it off, we get house renovation shows too. These are where the TV company buy dilapidated town houses and then make contestants (usually couples of some description) renovate them and auction them off at the end. Gripping stuff.
I also cannot stand weight loss reality shows. In fact, pretty much all reality tv just bores me to tears. There are reasons why most people are not famous: a lack of any discernible talent being one of the main ones - putting a camera in front of their face 24/7 doesn't change that basic fact. If I want to watch someone survive in the bush for 3 months I just let the German back-packers out of my cellar/dungeon. Heh...Heh....heh....
James.
I agree James reality TV has ruined the small amount of TV I actually watch.
Never watch that crap watch 60 mins, the news, jepordy and the history channel. In bed at nine, read till my nook falls in my face (about 9:15),up at 3:30 A.M.
I'm sick of these types of shows as well. Most nights after the little one is alseep, if we watch anything, we'll either watch an episode or two of MASH or watch a movie. My wife was hooked on "The Biggest Loser" for awhile, now I am one for people making changes in their lives for the better, but do I need to see some obese man take off his t-shirt before being weighed? So how I doubt a 10 ounce t-shirt will have a huge impact on the scale. Moobs are something once seen can never be unseen. And while we're at it, when did sit-coms become so full of blatant potty humor?
Do you still have Big Brother in Straya James? Was one of your proudest exports for a while ;)
My wife and I got rid of cable a number of years ago. We just upped our internet to close to the top end and download (legally) shows that we enjoy. We're both sci fi fans so that's usually the type we watch and we just subscribe to the season. Not sure if that's the correct term, but I think you know what I mean.
You know, I used to enjoy Big Brother. Especially the first time I saw it when I lived in the UK - they actually had interesting contestants and none of these stupid games nights and weird challenges it degenerated into over time.
In any event, I don't think it still runs in Australia. I have not seen any ads for it for a year or two, maybe. I don't pay a lot of attention to be honest. I think it may have died a slow ratings death when they started stocking it with contestants they thought would have sex with each other on camera.
James.
I'm not sick of them at all. Never seen any of them.
I just told 2 days ago the internet company that I do not have any interest in a package to also include TV and phone service. Makes you wonder why they keep being so persistent after being turned down for years.
I apologise for my countrymen....they seem to come up with most of these lame concepts and sell them the world over.
(at least Big Brother, The Voice and [insert nationality here] idol do.)
Shows like that turned me off television a long time ago.
All I seem to watch these days are my favorite sports and the main news broadcasts.
Luckily, most of my fav sports are aired on commercial-free stations, otherwise I would have had to skip that too.
I will not watch any channel who does commercials, period.
some of History channel, news, movies, soccer pretty much all you need the TV for. Reality tv even on the history channel needs to go... i gave up hbo, starz, encore when switched form showing movies to showing series.... i just don't feel the urge to commit to a weekly show, they are not well written and often are just adaptations of other shows.
I only have one channel picked up on antenna(NBC) that I hardly watch. Almost all of the TV I watch are shows that I buy on DVD. Cheaper than cable and I get to watch what I want. Currently watching "Sanford & Son".:)
I'm Coming Elizabeth! I love Sanford and Son
The common trait to most of these shows seems to be that they depend on publicly humiliating people. The most offensive to me, at least in terms of concept, are the "Survivor" shows, which make a game of what is for too many millions of people a desperate struggle, and which make a mockery of what survival in difficult situations really requires, namely, a community working togther to help all members of the community. And despite being placed in remote locales with few comforts, nothing really bad or dangerous is going to happen to any of the contestants. Sure, they might be a little uncomfortable, but the producers aren't about to let anything serious happen to any of them. I just find the whole thing disgusting. But like they say, bread and circuses.
Networks come up with shows that will sell and make them money. It's just a reflection on the general public really.
Kindle/Nook/Ipad etc.. would be the item to pick up, books are so.......twentieth centruty....:)
60 Mins,news.....talk about reality TV... :)
Since Archie Bunker hit the screen many years ago.
Called DVR. I do it all the time.
I agree, if I want reality I'll just go to work.
I think that TV is full of these shows nowadays, but it doesn't bother me. I hardly watch TV at all. Some years ago i made a decision to watch TV only when there's something that really interests me. Pretty soon i found out that there might be days or even weeks when i do not watch TV at all.
Well, that's true. I rarely watch TV, period, and when I do it's usually something on TCM or PBS. I was looking forward to "Mad Men" starting up again; my wife and I caught the first episode and haven't remembered to watch it since. Guess I'll wait for it to hit DVD.
Netflix. I can watch (mostly) what I want when I want. If it's a show that I'm hooked on, Top Shot being the only one right now, I go to my dad's for it. Paying for cable or satellite is a waste of money to me. It's basically paying a premium price for a few shows that I actually enjoy. I then find myself trying to find something else to watch in order to get my moneys worth.
Same thing here. Our national network is funded with licenses. 3 channels (2 Finnish, 1 Swedish as we are bilingual country), several FM stations and no ads or reality tv or stupid contests at all. Mostly high quality documents, most unbiased news, sports, quality movies and series from Finland, Scandinavia and Europe, some from USA too.
We have also common transmissions with Norway and Sweden: Oddasat, channel for Sami nation in the north. I used to watch it every now and then although i do not understand Sami language much. It was sort of charming: while in the big world big news are wars and massive catastrophes, in Sami areas #1 big news is when some grandma loses one of her cats or reindeers, then police, border guards and army are sent to search this poor animal. Usually they find it within few hours and return it to grateful old lady. Another big news is when someone gets a big fish or crab from their rivers.
Wife says all I ever watch is THE BLACK AND WHITE CHANNEL i.e. THE Military Channel!!
I get a kick out Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares and keep hoping he'll get clocked. LOL
A movie every now and then. Don't rely on TV news except for local stuff.
If I had to classify television with one word nowadays, BORING comes to mind first.
I got a kick out of a Survivor expos ay. This guy was crawling over a lava field talking about how dangerous it was and how he would probably die if injured. Later someone found the same spot and there was a highway close by.
I spend most of my time on the Military Channel (wife calls it the Hitler Channel), and shows like How it's Made. The rest is movies only. I hate reality shows, sitcoms, and sports.
Yes I am sick of those, and that is why I do not watch them.
