I have the straight razor that sharpton restored for me as my screen saver. Most that notice it ask if I have ever used it. I tell them I use a straight razor nearly every day. And if they ask I will explain to them why but most say "thats cool but I would probably slit my throat with it" and I just leave it at that. I have almost got one guy at work to try it, I loaned him Lynn's DVD and offered to lend him a razor.
Of the people I've mentioned my shaving habits to, I don't think any have reacted in any particularly strong way. No "that's awesome", "that's crazy", or "sounds dangerous."
It may be a bit anticlimactic, but people just don't really have much reason to react in such a caricatured way. I think someone asked me how expensive it was. I don't ask them what method of nail clipping they prefer, and so I figure their interest in my shaving habits is comparable.
Well I don't talk about it much any more in public unless someone asks... but when I first started everyone thought I was nuts. Now when a lady remarks how smooth a shave is I wink and say "Trade secret"
When I first started my store manager noticed a scratch on my face and asked how it happened. (being a concerned manager) I told her I was learning to shave again. She smiled and thought I was joking so I explained the new habit/hobby. "Ohhhh old school ? I like that", she said. Some others have noticed I shave everyday now and I tell them why. I have had more soft hands on my face in the last month than in the last 10 years. I do it for myself but the perks aren't bad either. I am just waiting for the 2 cheek grab. ( if you know what I mean) :dropjaw:
I've mentioned it a couple times to others. The first time I had a late work call that day, so the wife was getting ready the same time I was shaving. My bathroom sink was not large enough for the both of us. She would bump and I would "ugh." She thought I was playing around, so made no effort to be more careful. I turned to her having several 2-3" shallow cuts oozing blood and told her to stop. At work my supervisor asked me about my face, after I got done making a joke about trying to kiss a weed wacker I told him. He was interested, grandpa used to use one, but then suggested I used an electric.
The next time I was telling a guy that had more scruff than he normally does that time of day he should go take care of it (military appearance standards). He explained a second shave would irritate his face where he wouldn't be able to shave for days. Went through the normal questions trying to help him out, and turns out he was never taught how to shave, when to replace the blade, etc. He learned by watching others in basic training. So conversation went on to telling him what I know about shaving, which led to DE and straight shaving. I realized almost the entire platoon was standing there listening rubbing their chins. Over the course of the next few days over half of them tried to talk to me about shaving and straight shaving. Most said dad didn't tell me that, does it hurt or aren't you scared of killing yourself.
In the UK anyone old enough to remember a barber stropping a cutthroat is what we refer to as a pensioner (a senior in US speak).Quote:
