Besides military use i never though about specially 'needing' them. Shooting in a gallery is fun and useful to maintain good aim. But by no means essential to survive. here in the military we have to pass shooting tests twice a year. With both pistol and rifle, against standing and moving targets.
Specially in some post apocalyptic scenario that some seem to get prepared it would be most important to know how to hunt without a gun. Our ancestors did it for thousands of years without starving to death. Imho i think it is more important to be familiar with the basic knowledge on how to do it and keep yourself physically fit.
Even if guns would be useful, maybe, but specially in some walking dead world you get short of ammo sooner or later. Propably too soon. You can't carry 100 000 rounds in your backpack but you can carry basics on living in the nature in your head.

Just like the last post I made on "Homesteading" it is more a push toward more simplicity in life, not becoming a Total Homesteader from the 1800's without anything modern
Although some people take it that far I guess...
