Thread: Frederick Reynolds 6/8" Restoration

G'day guys (and Gals)

This is the second restoration job I have tried my hand at.
It is a Frederick Reynolds 6/8" with Horn Scales - about 1/4 hollow I think, with brass pins & double brass washers with internal thrust washers
A piece of white acrylic was used for the wedge.

The scales are a bit of a different shape to what is often seen.
I wanted to try making a set of scales that followed the shape of the razor, see pics below.
Comments and suggestions are most welcome.

looking very nice. As a newbie as well on the restoration front I'm interested in what others are up to, keep up the good work.

That looks a nice piece of horn - I imagine there's lots of striation that you don't capture in the photos.

One small suggestion, the spacer looks prettu even as opposed to wedge shaped - maybe a bit more angle would open up the scales and allow the blade to sit in easier.

Nicely executed and finished anyway.

I'm always happy to see a Frederick Reynolds restored to shave ready, and yours is very classy indeed

The photos dont really do justice to the scales, though it is a dark brown piece of horn so the striations don't show really well
I agree the wedge needs more angle on it to make the razor sit in properly
I may take it apart and try to fix that problem up
For now I just want to get a few shaves in with this razor.

This restore was a bit harder than I first thought it would be, the satisfaction is well worth it though
It shaves quite well considering it is honed to 8K level right now
I would love to take it to my Thuringian hone and see what difference that makes to the shave

hope you find it comfortable and enjoy your shave. i have an old Frederick Reynolds wedge and it is one of my favourite shavers. They take an excellent edge. Combine that with the work you have done and you should have a real winner there.
