Restored Frederick Reynolds honed and shave tested
Over the past weekend I finished restoring a Frederick Reynolds 6/8" quarter hollow razor
It took me a couple of attempts to get the bevel set to where I was happy with it
The first time I thought it was ok I found some pits in the edge when I looked with my 30x loupe
So I had to start again, then after more trial and error (a lot of error) realized the hone was probably not flat
Once I sorted that out I finally got to honing the bevel to a point where so no pits or nicks could be seen
Then it a matter of honing on a Norton 4K/8K hone and after more trial and error got what I felt was a good shaving edge
This morning I shave tested that razor and found it shaved quite well off the 8K hone
The edge was a bit harsher than I am used to - I just want to see how well it would shave at that level.
I guess I have been spoiled with the edge from a Thuringian hone
The feel of the blade was something different too as my other shave ready razors are nearly all full hollows
