Some new scales for my Filarmonica

I started making some scales for one of the members but unfortunately his blade never reached me from Sweden. So, as one of my Filarmonicas was a bit too loose and had a fracture at the pivot pin I decided to make use of the scales I'd started.
They are black horn lined with copper and copper pins without washers. I kept to the traditional Filarmonica shape and, although the scales are heavier than the originals, the balance is still OK because it's a 7/8" blade.

Thanks - the thing about Filly scales is that they have inbuilt bearers on the inside pivot - this is to accomodate the tang which tapers at the monkey tail and would rub on the insides without them. So, despite using brass internal washers, I had to taper the wedge so that I created a bow that accepts the tang without catching.

Those scales look super clean. I love the copper accent with the two tone color scheme. You nailed it brother!

Well the good news is that the original Razor turned up - even though we both assumed it was lost - so I'm going to do the same as originally planned.

As an amusing aside - when I started making the first set I sized the horn to required thickness, cut out the copper and used CA to join them overning in a vice. When I started cutting to shape, the horn and copper just fell apart - I'd forgotten to remove the protective film from the copper. From now on I rough up both surfaces.

If you don't mind how did you seal the copper liner to prevent it corroding and turning green over time?

Someone else suggested that a coating of varnish would help to prevent verdigris - to be honest I didn't consider that because the liners are accessible therefore a cotton bud with cleaning agent should be OK. The problem area as with any scales is likely to be round the pivot pin so some floss with the same cleaning stuff should be OK.

By the way, all of my razors are kept in a cabinet away from moisture - although this is no guarantee aganst corrosion, I don't have any problems so far.

Its the copper that set it way and above a lot of restorations. Beautiful work.

The use of floss comment to clean the pivot area is just another reason I love these SRP forums, the little comments and ideas that surface are endless
I looked at copper for wedge liners but stuck with brass because of this reason so the varnish also might be a good cover

Same here, great clean look plus like the "red" black contrast, as for sealing the copper, I think it'd be a good idea?

Exquisite! One question - how did you peen the pins sans washer without denting the horn? Just really slow and careful? I love the look and may try it myself.

There are many examples of peening without washers especially with original ivory - however, it's my opinion that this is also the main reason why you see so many ivory scales with splits and cracks. Basically a washer helps to spread the load, so peening without one can be risky.

Horn is very fibrous so is not likely to mark even if the hammer slipped off the pin, and is also less likely to fracture. Additionally, copper is quite soft compared to brass or silver nickel so I felt pretty safe in going solo on this occasion.

I can't stop looking at this razor. I really like the looks of Filharmonica scales in all of their incarnations, but you have pulled off what to me is nearly impossible, kept the original and went well beyond it in every way.

Yup, super nice and clean look. Just spectacular in it's simplicity (though I'm sure not that simple to make).
As for the copper I kind of like the look it takes on through regular use. If you let it sit, sure it'll change but constant touch may be enough to keep it looking good. I have a brass ignition box I made for my motorcycle that I had sealed, and the breakdown of the sealer over time almost looks worse to me than the tarnish would have... JMO.
