Unknown maker sent to me by sharptonn to be reground and restored

After another regrind and rescale I did a bit ago sharptonn contacted me and asked if I would like to give a go on a blade be had gotten for the scales. It had been ground much to thin on the heal and ended up with a couple holes and cracks. The crack and holes went rather far up into the blade. I reworked the blade and the tang. The tang had been sanded/ground down to the point that the maker is no longer known. Awhile back a good friend sent me a brush he had made for me. He also sent some of the martial that he had turned the handle out of. the blade is a hefty 1" with a very thin grind.

Laurens: It is pinned with brass on brass with fluted washers.

Without a doubt the BEST shave I have ever had. My first swipe of the blade I was disappointed as it had felt at tho it did not shave at all. Not even pull the hair. Then I noticed that my cheek was hairless. One touch of the hand revealed a one swip damn near bbs smooth cheek! I was simply beside myself. The blade seemed to glide around my face with no resistance on my 4 day beard. Simply amazing. I did learn one very important lesson however. That heal must be muted!!! I did not cut myself but I did feel it catch a couple of times.

I may not be a lover of blades that big but here is nothing that says I can't say job well done on a challenge of saving the unsaveable. Beautiful and masterful come to mind, as well of immense swelling of jealousy and avarice to want, hold and shave with that little mamser (Yiddish for illegitimate offspring) even if it would take both hands to do it.

Thanks HNSB! I thought I was the only person left on the planet that pays attention to geometry! I do all my work by hand so it gives me time to shape and grind in detail. It takes longer but the lines end up where I want them to end. A grinder just gives too much chance of "oops!" I have a great number of rasps rat tails and files that I use. then onto sandpaper. It is amazing what you can do with files a coping saw and sand paper. I have yet to find a razor that I needed more than that to work with.

Yes, it's a very nice job, not sure if I missed it, but how long is the blade edge? I want to make a razor with a short blade, I was thinking that a long tang would be the way to go. Though I have no real tools, materials or skills to do it but one for the one day pile. :)

So you lost about 1/2" off the blade then? It looks really right. Not that I am anywhere near being an expert, but the flow is really smooth, I like it very much.

just over 3/4". The lower half bevel of the tang also received a large amount of attention to keep the flow going. The bottom bevel was taken from 1/8" down to 1/32" and re tapered back up the tang.

Completely agree Razorfed. The amount of work I put into a razor is so very worth every second. Each one now does what it wants when it is in my hands. I know if I chose to move to a more effective path of restoration my time involved would be shaved down to a fraction of what it is now. Choosing to use grinders and sanders would not only decrease my time spent but would also increased the perceived quality of my work. That however is not the path I wish to follow. I enjoy the process of doing each and every step by hand. The feel of the steel and the slight taste it leaves on my tongue. The smells of the woods and the remaining life it has left that is tangible it seams only to my hands. As I work I tend to "fondle" my project often. I caress it and feel it's curves and shape and try to picture what it wants to be. Each person I restore for finds that same passion when they hold the blade for the first time. It makes every second worth while. I am new to art of any kind and still find amazement every time my work is enjoyed by it's intended user. That something I created would create change in someone else. My work is not perfect in any way but it speaks of the passion I attach to every project (and yes the money is nice as well). It is nice to know i am not the only nut bar around that loses himself to the wilds of the creative process.

Zerandise, you do me wrong, "nut bar?". Please realize that it is still on the plane of insanity. You, I and others are actually totally meshugah (that's Yiddush for completely nuts, the whole nine yards of it.)Ya gotta be crazy to do it and it'll drive you crazier if you don't do it. I know, I've been "doing it" for 65 of my 80 years. It's doesn't get easier, but then it doesn't get worse. Just a little more intense as we go with it. Keep up the work trances and if I ever need a razor restored then you're the man.
