This One Is For 10 Pups: All Original Vintage Restore: 11/8 "Cross - GB - Anchor"

Ok...this one is for 10 Pups. He has been after me to finish this one up for awhile...

I've been simultaneously working on several 8/8 to 11/8 'BIG BOYS' for awhile. I just finished a 'Rodgers' ( http://straightrazorpalace.com/custo...round-fbu.html ) and this one is next up with more to come.

I've been experimenting a lot with a 'crocus brushed satin finish' and I am finding that I really like ( I MEAN REALLY! ) this look for these big blades. On this GB I decided to do a two-toned finish: satin on the blade face and high polish on the spine and tang. I like it a lot but I am contemplating re-doing the blade in a complete satin finish to match the Rodgers I just finished. Opinions are more than welcome...so tell me what you think???

This is all ORIGINAL: It started out at 22/16 (11/8) but because of a sizable chip it will end up at 21/16 or 10.5/8. The original scales took a lot of work to bring them up to snuff but I think they turned out beautifully. The original collars are Steel Bulls-Eye type and I haven't finished those yet so when I finally get around to posting completely 'pinned up pics' that is how this one will look. It should complete the look...

Blade looks good. From the end view, it seems you might want to unpin it (unscrew) and steam the scales straight a bit. Looks like the blade will hit the back scale in the pics.
Not really a complete restoration yet, but a good workshop razor in progress! JMHO Pin it up! ;)

Hey Sharptonn! Thanks for the comments. Yeah...as you said it is just a final mock up with screws getting ready to be pinned. The next and final step... Along with many many others. LOL!

:rofl2: Sharptonn...sadly...I am already that guy. But...like the tortoise, the race doesn't always go to the hare. I already have a thread planned to show all the razors that I have worked on and restored all pinned up. Still trying to figure out how to duplicate some original collars for many of the blades...just trying to be as 'original' as possible IYKWIM.

You are doing great. I am admittedly a 'one at a time' restorer. Hate having several going at once. I like to do what it takes to finish and move on. I do have several waiting for a few parts as well! ;) So where do you get crocus for this? Nice finish!

I get the "finish it all at once concept"...just haven't been able to put the 'concept' to work. LOL!!!

Crocus can be found just about anywhere: Google, Ace Hardware. a good Auto Supply house, machine shops, gunsmiths, etc. Just make sure you get the cloth back not the paper back. That way you can use it like a jewelers rouge cloth. It really works well as a final step, and I am really liking the effect.

Been keeping my eye out for one....really great restore, like everything you did!!

It is looking real good now and a lot safer. Glad to see it coming together. I tell you guys, this thing is humungous. When your holding it, you think anchor without looking at the logo. And although I love the two tone look I am leaning towards satin all over. Tough call, but it doesn't matter, it is a fine piece either way. I am trying to design a mini 1/16 hp rivet gun so you can pin those things in short order without touching the scales. :<0)

BIG Blade. Very nice finish. You asked for opinions; well, I think it looks great like this. The combination of satin and polish is great.
In some other thread on some other forum in a relatively distant past, someone once wrote a nice story about the older razors probably not ever having been polished to mirror finish in the older days, because there was either no need, or the techniques were not there. I don't know. In that respect, a full satin finish might suit the originality better, but I like the way you did it now better, pure for looks. My two cents. :)

Simply gorgeous - for me, I prefer the mirror polish, I like it so shiny I can see my nose hairs and I love to see the water bead off the finish!! It's a spectacular blade and you did a magnificent job on the restore of it. That's the Holy Grail blade for me, been on the hunt for one of those for a long time.

That is an awesome blade, skillfully restored. I'd love one of those to work on. Be sure to let us know how it shaves...and best of luck getting any kind of angle on the upper lip!
