First attempt at Restoration of Frederick Reynolds

Bought this razor for $6.50 and have learned a lot in just working on this razor. Takes a lot of dedication and time and a big spectrum of different grit wet/dry sandpapers. I know that it is not perfect, but that is where I am going to keep it at. I will have to figure out what needs to happen for scales next. Don't really have tools to make scales. Any suggestions? I have a much greater appreciation for the people who do this work and what it takes to make old razors look better than when they were new. Everyone who does this keep up the great work and I will keep trying.

Nice work on the blade. WRT the scales, why replace them -- are they broken or damaged? I can't tell, from the photos.

Scale was broke on one side so would like to have a newer set or an old set.

Maybe if you ask someone nicely they will make you a set of scales. So far it's looking like progress. The other option it to glue the old scales back together. I have not tried it but is should be possible, unless you are missing a piece, then it gets more complicated.

The old ones were missing a piece. I know someone who would make me some, but I have asked a lot of him and do not want to ask more of him at this time. I was just really happy to get as far as I have. I know there are others that can make them, Not sure if you make them, but if you do maybe you would be interested in helping me out. Interested? There is a video on youtube and in the wiki on how to make scales with the least amount of tools. Its buy "lewisrazors" on youtube but here is the link. making straight razor scales with a minimum amount of hand tools - YouTube

I haven't made any scales yet but seems pretty straight forward and cost of supplies used seem pretty minimal.

Well, I decided to tackle scales, bought some oak and need to work hard at them because of the hardness of the wood. I will succeed, will just take a while to thin them down. Using all hand tools and sanding. Slow tedious process. Thanks for inspiration cosperryan and Rezdog. Giving them by best shot.

Looks like you got the scales down pretty good. Nice figure in the oak. Now just final shaping and finish. What are you planning for the finish.

I have been putting off making scales for a couple of razors for a few weeks now. I keep looking at pics in the workshop and getting intimidated by the level of craftsmanship but you have convinced me that it is time to just take a stab at it.

I needed to get a coping saw, sandpaper, and some small inexpensive clamps. Best suggestion would be don't start with oak, slow and hard wood. I have no work bench. If I can do it all by hand you can too. I traced the one old scale I had. Good luck and don't be afraid of it. Did you watch the you tube earlier in the posts in here? I have all the tools. I know all about oak. I made a longbow from red oak and it was tough stuff. and while functional it was not pretty. I am going to see what i can find here in Tucson material wise today. I am considering PVC. I have made bows from it so all i have to do is flatten it at see what i can do. Thanks

Why not use double sided tape rather than the mini clamps? It will make is easier to manoevre.

Also drill the pivot and wedge holes while the two are taped together.

I plan to use carpet tape.

Rubber Cement also works very well.

Rob is right, drill the holes while the scales are together.

I did tape them, but clamps just ensure them staying together. I will drill when close to getting thickness right. Thanks for suggestions.

I usually drill my pivot hole and then mock up the blade with screws and then set the wedge with double sided tape to get the blade centered, remove the blade and drill the wedge hole, finish all my sanding etc and then glue the wedge and pin it together.

Looking good! Is that the original lead wedge. It looks like you have gotten them thin enough to get the wedge to do its job and the the scales bowing nicely. You may want to do with a double stack washer to help keep the washer from biting into the wood because the bottom washers will be wider giving more surface area against the wood. You are getting very close to woo hoo its done and looking good.

Yes that is the original lead wedge. I actually was thinking about the dual washer approach I have three different ones coming tomorrow. I am getting excited. Should not be much longer. Not sure how I will pin quite yet, but will watch some youtube videos and such and give it my best. Thanks for the support RezDog.

It took me quite a few attempts to get my pinning so that I was happy with it. One of my issues was starting to peen when the pins were just a tiny bit too long, and then bending the pin as a result. If your pin isn't peening enough to tighten down stop and file a tiny bit off. 1/32 of an inch can make a big difference. You can pin with very few tools, two hammers, wire cutters, file and a pair of vice grips and you should be golden. PM me if you have any questions after you watch the videos

See and you thought the scales would be hard. They turned out awesome. Nice color on them too. The whole package looks very nice and sleek. I like how the blade sits low in the scales where only the spine shows.

lead wedges are so easy to make. You can get lead in a roll at the fishing store, take a torch and drip a blob on to the tail of the vice. When it has cooled hit it with a large hammer to flatten it into a large wedge shape and just guess at the size. rough sale it and put it in the scales with double sided tape, take it out and adjust the size as needed, finish off the rough shaping and tape it in and drill it half way from each side. No risk of wiping your finger prints off in the sander.
