Thumbs-up for Gssixgun

I sent a razor off to Glen (gssixgun) for restoration... Even though I haven't received it yet, I am really impressed with the work and attention to detail.

The razor was an old Wade & Butcher anchor, in very average condition, as evident by the pics below. The scales weren't usable, so he made new ones from Lignum Vitae wood, and a matching brush with TGN high mountain white badger. Not sure of the loft etc, as I trusted him to set it as he liked his brushes.

For the brush he recessed a brass anchor into the base, to match the brass wedge in the razor.

When discussing the restoration project, I said I would like something in the nautical theme, due to the anchor, hence the use of Lignum Vitae wood. From there I pretty much left it with Glen and his expertise, and very happy with the results.

I must say also, that communication from Glen was fantastic (not only on this razor but the other couple also with him at the moment). I'm not a rich man, but I feel this restoration has been worth every penny :)'

Also, if anyone is interested, it is 9/8 at widest point. Not sure of the spine thickness but apparently it is very hefty.

Beautiful razor and brush , enjoy the fine craftsmanship :)

Fantastic work as expected,set the brush in the sun for for a few days,the handle will turn dark green and match the scales.

Beautiful - an W&B Anchor...nice, very old, and very hard to come by...congratulations on a wonderful piece of history.

I believe it was mentioned somewhere, that the Anchor symbol in fact didn't represent the steel being made in Birmingham, that the anchor mark meant something else, I'd even heard that it was branded that way for sale at various ports for sailors? Is there a definitive answer on the anchor stamp?

How's your anchor going Phrank? Is it nice to shave with?

Id also like to know more about the history of the anchor razor, haven't seen many around and very little info.

Heres a visual of what you can get,real Lignum is a fantastic wood (40% oil by wgt) When exposed to U.V light the oils oxidize and the color darkens.
I have had 100 yr old british Lawn Bowls that are jet black.
This pce was fresh cut two weeks ago,taped and set in the sun for 3 days.

Well, one thing about them, they are definitely heavy blades, and long enough that you can basically do one WTG pass down each side of your face and you're basically done! These older blades tended to be longer it seems. Either way, will wait to see it on the SOTD and what your thoughts are.

Glen did a magnificent job on the razor and the added brush is a very nice touch! Always nice to see a gem like that get the treatment it deserves.

Yes wanted it to have the attention it deserved hence sending it to Glen rather than attempting it myself.

Once I find a nice 8/8 Celebrated for barbers use at a reasonable price I will send to glen as well for similar treatment.

Really glad you like it, I enjoyed the challenge, took a bit of thought as to how I was going to find the right Anchor then how I was going to use it on the brush...

I wish I had taken some in process pics, the before pics don't give any idea as to how deep the pitting was under there, now the Restorers here, they will understand when I say it took 7 applications of 80 grit greaseless on 2 wheels to pull them :)


Specs on the brush:

OAL = 115mm

Loft = set as close to exactly 50mm as I could get it :)

Looks superb congratulations on owning such a fine razor, and hats off to Glen for such fine work.

You know, I've been watching Glen's resto work for years and years now and it never ceases to amaze me at the quality and attention to detail he puts into each and every one.

Congratulations on owning such a beautiful blade, and having the foresight to see that something that started out less than perfect could end up looking like this.
