I thought Kamisori as well and then it got more interesting. I think you have taken razor art to a new level.

I considered that. It's a tradeoff.
Opening it up before HT has the advantage that you can start filing inwards without having to drill holes first. Drilling the holes isn't as easy as it sounds because I forge all blades to size. This means that the blade portion is already wedge shaped. Drilling through slanted surfaces can be a bit tricky. If I started with a rectangular piece of stock, it would indeed have been a no brainer.
