Early 19th Century “Anchor” Razor…

Here is a razor that I just finished up for a good friend here at SRP. Hard to guess when this razor was actually manufactured…my best guess is ‘early 19^th century’… BUT…because there is no actual makers mark, and just an ‘Anchor’ stamped on the front tang, it’s difficult to place the date with any degree of certainty.

For sure and for certain, this was a real ‘project razor’, so I’ll just let the before and after pictures tell the story on this one. This one’s for you Andrew…

It looked for awhile that this one was too far gone, but wow, can't believe it's the same blade...just gobsmacked over how beautiful you restored it, scales are gorgeous, pins, and as you mentioned, no makers mark??? The Anchor looks like a GB, but who knows...the mystery!?!

I know you put a lot of work into this one, thank-you very much, it looks fantastic!

Thanks Mike and Wirm...I appreciate the comments. And Mike...yeah the pitting was very deep on this razor. I almost gave it up more than once. Here's a couple of earlier pics about half way through where I was ready to throw in the towel ;) , but just stepped back for a day and then started up again...

Wow, I admire your patience on that one. I'd have given up pretty much the second I would see such pitting.
It's great that you guys can bring these blades back to life. The anchor intrigues me. I've had 2 GB Anchor-Cross' so far and one very huge Wade and Butcher with an anchor, but I've never seen only an anchor and no makers mark. Birmingham perhaps? Thanks for sharing. Amazing work.

Firefighter2 ... as to how many hours went into this razor, I couldn't really say. I really don't keep track of the hours or the time involved in any razor. I just work on it until I am as happy as I can be with what I am capable of accomplishing. :shrug:

It arrived in the mail today...stunning...and I can't wait to try the Coti/Escher edge, then stropped on a lead treated strop by Wolfpack...this may set of all sorts of AD's...my next shave will be with it and will post on the SOTD!

Wow! That is truly remarkable. I wouldn't have thought those after pics were possible given the condition of that blade.
