Humpback Rattler

This one was fun. Frederick Reynolds bright crocus type finish, rattler ground blade just a tad less then a 7/8. The original dyed horn scales were broken at the pivot end and bug eaten. Faux turtle (polyester) at .110 thick replaced the originals with a lead wedge and brass pins and collars. Honed up and shaved sweet.
The before picture is from eBay. Sorry about that. I didn't think to take before pictures.

The light box makes the pictures look more professional I guess but they don't do the blade finish and scale color justice IMHO so I've included a picture from this morning in natural light.

Boy that sure is a beautiful razor, well done.

The scale material is called Tortuga East from Masecraft Supply. I did a short write up on it back in October in the Workshop forum. It's titled Imitation Turtle/Dyed Horn Scales. Maybe someone will chime in and tell me how to link a page. I recently ordered more and was dismayed to find it was not the same material. Seems the vendor is not consistent from lot to lot. The folks at Masecraft said they would contact the vendor and find out what the heck happened. I'm currently waiting a response. The material on the left in the photo is what I just received and on the right the old material.

I think the pic on the left is an imitation of the rare Leopard Tortoise :D
I feel now there is a gap in my razor portfolio...what a great restore of this fascinating grind, thanks.
And, +1 on the light box. It is not that easy to photograph metal to look like metal. I really like your daylight pic.

Too bad they're not consistent. There's lots of not so great faux tortoise out there, but that stuff looks great on that FR. If it's not too expensive I may try my luck on my next order with them.

I have a couple of Rattlers .

I just need some thing to help me sand under the edge of the spine without loosing that sharp line. Maybe some kind of thin rod?

I ordered some of that tortuga based on the earlier write up. Sadly I received the same as your lot on the left. Still going to plow ahead as return shipping even if they got more would be silly from up here. I hope once overlapped the spots take on a deeper overall tone.

Beautiful job on the scales, I have an Elliot that is very similar, with the original scales, they're faded a bit, but pretty much bang-on to what you put on that Reynolds - very nice!;)

Wonderful job you did with this razor, the tortoise pattern is very nice, I much prefer these pattern of tortoise than the one most commonly used, the one with the streaks of colour as opposed to spots.
