what's the 3rd, middle pin for? does it act like a stopper?
That's a beauty. Looks like it was made for the French market.
I don't agree that's it is either a stopper or a sign of quality. Most straights are based on the size of the wedge to restrict how far the blade falls into the scales and I've yet to come across a razor that relies on the middle pin to do this.
As far as quality is concerned, I've seen bog standard razors in black celluloid scales with a mid pin but I've yet to see it used in, say, Ivory or other top quality scales.

3 pin razors and ivory scales are from different eras, years apart.
Can only speak of razors that have crossed my path, all 3 pin razors have been above average in looks and quality, fit and finish. Do they shave any better?...:shrug:
All of the ones I have seen are from Germany...
