William Ryals restoration

This razor belongs to our fine member, Jerry. ( Gasman)

His history search, indicates Mr. Ryals was a razor maker, on Furnivall St. in Sheffield, England in 1822. Nothing more is known at this time.

But Jerry contacted me on a few tips for repairing horn scales, I told him if he'd like, to send them my way. This was a new project I'd never delved into, I've repaired all sorts of scales n types, but never streaked w/multi colors.

So I saved the dust from sanding, keeping colors separated the best I could for blending, later.
I then would blend small amounts of dust with CA, to test the colors before committing to doing the actual repairs.

Their not a perfect match, but I'm pleased at how close they came out, after the oil bath and polishing.

The blade was a bit screwed up, mostly the back side thank god. Someone before Jerry, attempted a regrind, but with what, I don't know.

So I cleaned the blade faces up a bit with some 400&600 greaseless, then hand sanded with 400 and then a scotchbrite wheel in the dremmel, for a brushed look.

Then 400,600 W/D paper with oil on the tang, for a satin look, and polished the toe, spine, and outer edges of the tail.

With the help of some bullseye collars, sent in the nick of time, by our member Tom (Sharpton), and some brass pins, and its original pewter wedge, its back in its glory once more.

Amazing job Mike. You have worked your horn magic once again. I congradulate you on a top notch job and in record time. Glad i didnt try to do it myself, you might have had even a bigger mess to fix if i did. This will be the most prised razor in my collection.

And Thank You Tom for donating the washers. They look like they should be there. Keeps the dated look and thats important in old restores in my opinion.

Ryalls, William (, Razor Manufacturers).
Address: 14 Hereford Street, in 1828-9.
Recorded in: Pigot's Commercial Directory - 1828 to 1829.

There's other Ryalls listed in the cutlery trades, some may be connected who knows ?

Thanks fellas, cool part is...I got to shave with it first, after who knows how many years it sat. And there's enough metal in the blade, that if Jerry should ever decide to have it professionally ground, he can.

Seriously though, Jerry traded me some stuff I really wanted for a razor I wasn't using. Even if I didn't realize someone could turn that razor into a super-cool work of art.:dropjaw:

All i can say is thanks to JP5 for the trade and thanks to Mike for working his magic on it. Im a happy camper as they say.

Truly one of the magical restorations I've been privileged to view.

That turned out to be a mighty fine looking razor.

Should be delivered today according to the postal service. Hoping to give it a try tonight. But i know it will shave. Mike did it so im not worried about that. Just worried about the postal service.

Just checked and they say its at my home now. Work always gets in the way of fun!
