Finished customizing this Rodgers 8/8ths today.
I gave it that extra modern bit of bling , a triple lined wedge :shrug:
The scales/Wedge are rosewood..
It doesn't have an edge on it yet so I shouldn't count my chickens.

Beautifully done. I really like your choice of wood for the razor. Distinguished and old looking.
Great looking wedge! nicely tapered.
The “mass” of the wood scales complements the size of the blade and tang.

i havent made any lined wedges for a while. now you got me thinking again.

The wedge took weeks to make.
I made one from steel also and nearly gave up several times but "Extreme Wedgeing" is a hobby of mine :whipped:
I am always happy with that particular Rosewood , it is very dense and therefore doesn't expand and contract so much. Also the grain pattern is unbeatable in my books.

I've done some extreme wedging, though never completed my triple wedge, one wrong move and you gotta start over.
And so when I messed up my second attempt, and then was distracted from a third attempt, I decided to take a break from that wedge... Someday I'll try again.
Getting those two slices just right is a big challenge.

I used to do some extreme wedging, when I was a young buck. :angel:
Here is an example of a double lined wedge (or simply lined wedge).
This was when I finally brought together multiple techniques learned on this forum to create something I am proud of.
One technique is finishing the final outside edge of the wedge (and scales), while it is together with the scales... So that it is perfectly flush.
W&B Celebrated FBU, bog oak 3700yrs, brass and mammoth wedge.
I really like double wedge pins, and maintain that it's not easy to get just right. Though there are those who don't like them! I'll mention no names.. Ahem! Hehehe

The most important part is the initial stages . Take 2 pieces of wood, lets say each piece measures : 2" x 2" x 1cm depth. (I hope that makes sense)
Sandwich those two pieces with lets say a piece of brass as the meat in the sandwich. Glue them...
Then taper both sides of the wood with the metal in the centre and make a wedge shape.
Then simply add a piece of brass either side of the wedge.
That is really the most important part. If I had my time again I would take photos and a 4K video .
I will always try to out do myself so my brain is already devising the ultimate in Extreme Wedging..

Yes, that is nice work and a ”how to” would be interesting.
Did you make a large wood wedge so both pieces would be identical or make them separately to match?
What is the thickness of your sheet stock?

The rosewood looks great! I'm curious, what rosewood is it specifically and what did you do for the finish?
Was the wood you used stabilized?

No need to stabilize rosewood, I'm pretty sure even the softer, porous outer wood is fine with various finishes including oils. Also it's a dense wood at the core, and can go with simply a high grit sandpaper finish.
I'm also wondering though, if it is indeed stabilized, didn't know it ever to be so..

Making a wedge is a total pain in the backside, hence many opt for a spacer.
Personally I want everything to be jaw droppingly beautiful from the wedge to the natural edge on the blade. Form and function just like sharp & smooth, I want both.
It does however make more sense to make a spacer because of the problems that come with wedges. Example: You can take a piece of wood and angle one side , 50% of your wedge made. Then you start to angle the opposite side . With a lot less work on the second side and without creating the same angle as the first side your wedge can look complete. To the naked eye it can look like a perfect wedge yet when you add scales the difference in angles will lead to pivot hole that don't match up 100% = a blade that wont centre = headache .
Then consider only a near wedge blade can accommodate a beefy type wedge in most cases. Angles of the wedge causing stress on the scale material = pulling on the wedge and or its lining . No amount of glue and pinning can handle certain constant pulling.
When the wedge is in place and must be equalled to the scales which requires sanding, which creates heat, heat = melted glue / metal and wood expanding , contracting at different rates. (hand sanding, less friction/heat, time consuming but better wedge survival rate)
Most important when creating wedges are flat surfaces . Take a chopping board, sand paper , tape it down, use balls of masking tape to secure the wedge and start sanding. Lighter pressure = flatter even surfaces.
Cut all your wood and metal pieces, drill all your holes, larger than needed will help.
Re sand all your parts , drilling will create burs and raised parts.
Glue them all together or one piece every day. Your choice.
If every part is flat and pressure is applied at every corner and edge whilst the glue sets, you should be good.
Forget about JB Weld or Gorilla glue, go with Devcon I suggest.
The inner part of the scales at the wedge end has to be completely flat to every edge and corner. Use a sharpie and a light touch sanding for results.
I couldn't write another step by step how to after the one I did last night that got lost.
So instead I wrote this , just a ramble with some tips in there.
You guys all have skills. Trail n error + effort will get you there.
I hope this helps in some way.
My next wedge I will make a video. As you can tell im not all that at the written word :)

I forgot to mention the scales are Rosewood, Mexican maybe?
Sad part is that I used another set of scales worth to make the wedge. Silly boy.
It is not stabilised just sanded up to 3k and then on the buffing machine with a high polish compound.
Again ill say its a stunning grain pattern..( the white looking flecks are cherry wood filler)
2 Layers of tape gave a great bevel angle and a thin even bevel. Better than I could have hoped for..
Finished the blade with a Satin finish.

I hate that more than ever. Spend a bunch of time doing a write up with all the pics, only to bump the wrong key, and gone to cyberspace..... WTF.!!! AAAAAAH..!!! :gaah: :aargh:
As for making wedges, by hand is my favored choice.
To keep things perfectly flat and even, I use a large file, clamped to the table, and a jig for holding the wedge, while I tapper it.

While I have by necessity done most things without power equipment, the right power tool can make things go much quicker, allowing expansion of ideas that get bogged down otherwise.
Its nice to at least rough it out, and then get it perfect by hand.

Outback, I like that jig. , I had one similar, and wanted to make a set of given angles and pin settings/positions.
