A pair of traveler razors by Wade

A rare gentleman's set of travel razors. Robert Wade was listed as a razor manufacturer on Arundel St. in 1816. In 1821 he join with William Butcher forming 'Wade & Butcher' becoming one of the most famous and prosperous cutlery firms in Sheffield. The blades are quite small at less than 5/8 with an arris spine. The show face of the spine at one time had an etching but it was not legible on one blade and had been completely sanded off on the other. The decorative plunge ground tang is unusual. The blade is restored with glazed finished blade faces and crocus finished spine and tang. The scales are ivory with a lead wedge and copper pins. A standard size razor is shown for comparison.

Just curious - did the razors come in a twin travel box or sheath? They seem small enough to have been made to fit in a travel kit of some sort.

As usual, a wonderful restoration. The owner should be very pleased.

They came in a small leather covered wooden box. The customer removed the rotten leather cover and refinished the wood. He sent me this picture.

Yes, the shave with the first blade was incredible. I assume the second will be just as fine. The blades are a joy to hold, albeit quite small. The box, while I am unsure is original, is quite old. Probbalt walnut on the sides. I restored it by removing the leather, then sanding all wood surfaces to 12,000 grit with micromesh. Rejuvenated with wood wax. Sprayed with Deft satin clear then leveled with steel wool for satin finish. Original steel screw. Karl did an amazing job!Attachment 317677Attachment 317678Attachment 317679Attachment 317680

A great job there, I'm currently doing a twin/traveler set for myself I'm hoping to remove the ivory scales and reuse them, if I can get them off without breaking them
