W&B The Celebrated Hollow Ground Razor For Barber's Use

I've been done with this one for a while but waiting to get my light box set up and get some pictures that did it justice. Not as pristine as I'd like it but considering what it looked like when it came to me I'm pretty pleased with the way it looks. As far as the shave it is fabulous.

Scales are original as is the wedge.

One of the collars was missing and I didn't have one that matched so I replaced them with almost the exact match from ajkenne. Thanks Austin.

The blade was 17/16 when I got it but after removing the chip and correcting the heel and tang to bevel geometry I still wound up with a shade over 31/32.

Thanks guys. This was my first FBU chopper. They go for stupid money but I now see why. If you like a big beast then you would love one of these. Steel is great, heft is great, look is great. It gives a sweet, clean, mega-shave. Best too much money I ever spent on a razor

I get plenty of real estate to shave but don't have to learn to shave my top lip or chin.

You have any pics of this looking straight on at the toe? Was wondering how thick these were, only stamped Sheffield so I assume pre 1890 but hollow grinding machine was 1893 so they must have been freehanding the hollow grind?

I haven't taken any I don't think but I will and will post some. You're right that the Hexe machine was invented in 1893 or there abouts but that was not the beginning of hollow grinding. It just made it much easier and mainly faster.

I've seen some razors which were more like half hollows from the 1800's, some would even have stamped into the spine things like "Ground on a 4 inch wheel", but I haven't too many attempts at what we would call a full hollow where you're grinding with two different sized wheels. I guess they must have though. I can't imagine they got those paper thin grinds until the Hexe, or maybe I'm wrong there too!

Oh no, that definitely affected the thickness and more full hollow grinding was feasible because of the hexe machine which, by the way means witch in German. There were some but nowhere near as many or as hollow as after the hexe came into use.

I've actually been meaning to try and make one. I don't have room enough in my shop, which is my garage presently.

I think the most complicated part of the design would be how you move one wheel closer to the other whilst in operation, especially if you want to drive both wheels from one motor.
