Who has the biggest bone in town?

This is a very, very big and heavy full wedge razor, that a SRP member sent to me, to rescale it. He wanted a a bone handle. The problem was, as I promised to make this, I dont thought, that this razor is soooo big.
Now I dont had bone plates in the right size. So I had too buy at the lokal butcher the greatest cadle bone he had in stock. After hours of cooking, sawing and sanding this bone I managed to make this single pair of scales of it. The rest of the bone went to dust and killed by his way 3 belts with a grit of 40 of my belt sander.

Now the razor has 120 grams!
At the blade himself I made nothing. I think its not possible to polish the side with the masonic signs without to destroy them. And the razor would lost his soul, if you have an old side and the other is high polished.

The wedge is from polished snakewood and tin. To assemble the razor I needed more than two hours, because it don´t want to close centered. The problem is that the blade is relatively thin at the pivot but very wide at the top. But finally it worked.

Good Lord--that's not a razor--it's a Viking war axe! :D

Seriously, nice work with those scales. What a project! Finding bone pieces that size was much easier when I was young; we'd just carve them up after the mammoth hunt.

Nice! Since the bone was fresh, what was your process for preparing the bone? I saw you said cooking, sawing, sanding, but what exactly did you do?

first I let cut the bone in the butcher store like that:

Now I cooked the middle piece, because of the fat and meat, thats still on the bone. 4-5 hours was enough. After that I cleaned the bone from this organic stuff, that was still on it.

Now you have normally bone pieces like that:

Now you must look, how you can cut the greatest plate from this bone. This is different from bone to bone. The best way to saw the bone is, when it is wet. For that you can immediately use the cooked bone or you but it some hours in water. So the material is a little bit softer and dont stink so terrible.
I used a saw like that, that I puttet in vise:

But I think a bandsaw would work better. If you now have the raw plates they must dry before you can sand them plain. Otherwise you will smearing your belts of the belt sander.
After that I used my jigsaw to cut the shape, sanded them again with the dremel an by hand and at least I buffed them.

I was going to try cutting some from buffalo and giraffe bone but have not gotten around to it. I have a good band saw but from what I have heard, you are only to use that blade once and then it is trashed.

Perhaps they use in the butcher shop a different sawblade :shrug:

I used a band saw at work to cut some slabs from a pet store dog bone. It was cooked and bleached by the look of it.

Took it to a grinder, and it gave off an awful smell, like burning hair. I think I'll need nose plugs...

Cleaning bone is a mess. The easy way to do it, go to the pet store and get a prepared beef bone for a dog. They are cleaned, degrease and dried. I use a bandsaw with a 3/8 junk blade for cutting the bone down then start with an 80 grit belt in the belt sander to flatten and final shape the bone. Then go up a couple grits to smooth it out and finish sand it by hand.
