Vintage Brush Restores

While this is no great feat compared to the wonderful razor restores frequently here,I just wanted to show those who don't know about it a good way to get a badger brush and still maintain some of the nostalgia of these old brushes.(And save a heap of money)Bought a few Vintage brushes off e-boy.Cut,drilled,pried,whatever it took to get the old brushes out.Cleaned and polished the handles.Glued in the new badger knots(from The Golden Nib) with waterproof epoxy.22mm silvertip on left.22mm finest on right.Haven't shampooed or used yet so no bloom to them.
Paid about $8 for the handles each shipped.$17.95 on the silvertip.$13.95 on the finest.$5 shipping for both.

They look really great & that's a good way to get a quality brush for a far lower cost. How are you finding the knots? Are you happy with the quality?

Will have to post back on that as I am giving them extra time for the glue to dry.Directions say 24 hours,but I'm giving them at least twice that since the knot bases are down in the handles and can't get much air.

Maybe on the yellow one.That's the only one I went above the minimum on.I put minimum bids on 3 others that day expecting to maybe get one,and guess what? Got all three.

Just a bit of info, epoxy does not need air to cure. It's a chemical process. So giving it extra time is not needed.

that's cool... and here i was wondering where to get a handle to glue in my own know.

I just use a spade bit after trimming the hair off the old brush... but there is a tutorial here

Sometimes if you get lucky,you can grip the base of the old knot with pliers and twist it right out.Other times,you have to pull the old knot out a small clump at a time with pliers.On one,I had to cut the knot off flush with a sharp knife,then drill it out.I used a fairly small drill and made holes as close together as possible.Then used a small screwdriver to crack the old glue between the holes.Of course being careful not to crack the handle itself.

Didn't know pumice stone brushes existed.Here in the states,lots of people use pumice stones to sand off their rough feet.Does that make this a dual purpose brush?

Neither did I but the owner assures me that's what it is. He's had it 10 years.
Definitely not dual purpose, its quite slick like soapstone... No, you can't wash your hands with it either :rofl2:

That is a pretty cool substance to make a brush handle out of.Wish I could touch it to see what it feels like.

It's actually very heavy which made me doubt it was pumice & it is quite porous despite the smooth finish.
I just know it broke easily.

That is really neat. Thanks for sharing the info. I just received a couple brushes in rough shape that I was considering tossing. Thanks to you, I now know that they can be restored.

True, but the volume of epoxy can drastically effect curing time with some epoxies, so giving it extra time probably isn't a bad idea since there may be a lot of epoxy in the bottom of that brush.
