I thought maybe I could keep the etching on the blade, but gave that up pretty quickly. The original grind marks were on the front and back of the blade, and they had a nice look to them, but the pitting needed to go and that meant the grind marks did too.
After putting in quite a few hours of sanding I determined that I did not want to generate a completely bright and shiny razor. Everyone has one of those and I wanted this one to be a little different. I decided to make only the blade faces shiny, while the rest of the razor stays satin. I taped off the areas that I wanted to stay satin while I was buffing the faces of the blade. The blade very shiny but not quite mirror, there are still some small scratches that I don’t have the patience or skill to get out at this time.
The original scales did not seem to fit with the blade very well. When closed the razor seemed almost perched on top of the scales. I wanted the razor to close almost completely into the scales, so the wedge is pretty thick. It is some swirly orange acrylic material I found at Lee Valley which and was originally intended to become a pen. Because the razor is pretty big, I went with 1-72 washers
The shape of the razor really appeals to me and I wanted to replicate that in the scales. The curve along the top of the scales matches the curve of the razor’s spine. Big smiling blade here. I tried to get the non-pivot end of the scales to match the curve on the point of the razor as well.
The canvas micarta has some cool texture, but it isn’t very black once you start working it. Not sure if I will use that again. Linen, paper, or G10 next time
