8/8 NOS Dorko in pink ivory with matching silvertip

I picked this one up for shavingshop.com a few months ago. It is a new old stock Dorko 8/8 best silver steel round point with a diamond stamped spine. I love Dorko razors, this will make a quartet of big blade Dorko’s for me. The steel is NOS, but the scales are generic red plastic, that just wont do. So I knocked the pins out, gave the blade a sanding from 800-12000 grit micromesh then some white rogue and Maas to shine it up nice.

I have had these pink ivory epoxy resin finished scales sitting in my ready for a blade pile for a couple of months. So I decided to marry the two. The wedge is cut from purple heart. I hit it with the tourch to scorch it after it was cut and sanded. When you heat/burn purple heart the oils come to the surface and the wood takes on a very dark royal purple. The blade has brass thrust bearings, the pins are 1/16 rod with brass over stainless washers.

But wait, that’s not all! Sorry, in an infomercial mode. Did a pink ivory 26mm silvertip to match. Set the knot deeper than I normally do to keep the knot dense and stiff but still silvertip soft. It balanced out nicely and whips up an awesome lather.

I still have to hone it, I put a small gimp in the edge when pinning it but it will hone right out. Should shave like a million.

To take out some of the factory mill marks for a little extra shine. Purely cosmetic.

sweet. what finish did you use on the pink ivory?

A high gloss epoxy resin. I use it a lot on my scales. Gives the wood a nice deep look and is hard as nails.

I did not sand out every little mark, just wanted to freshen it up a little. That is why I started at 800 grit. I honed it today, wicked sharp, typical Dorko. It gets a shave test tomorrow morning. Not often you come across NOS 8/8 steel.

Great looking set, love the shape of those scales and the spinework on the blade. Brush looks good too - simple yet elegant. Well done!

I had a go with my 8/8 Theunissen, which I suspect to actually be a Dorko, and the shave really was top-notch.

Perhaps I now know why Dorkos inspire such craziness on Ebay!

What is that wedge/spacer made from?

Shaves like a Dorko. I have had a bunch of razors pass through my hands. I have never sold a Dorko and seek them out when looking for another blade. I also have several Heribert Wacker razors, never parted with one of them either.

The wedge, it is a wedge not a squared spacer, is made from purple heart wood. I have a jig of sorts that I have made for sanding the wedges to the proper shape on the disk sander. It does not take much angle to shape them.
