Lloyd and Walton Philadelphia 5/8 wedge in Cocobolo

This started life totally encased in rust. It was bad, I mean real bad. Normally I would have not even entertained the idea of working on it but since it was a Philadelphia make razor it is somewhat unique. So I decided to put in the hours, and there is probably 20 of them, sanding it back into life.. There is still a light shadow here and there but considering what it looked like when I started, I am quite happy with it.


It is a very old 5/8 wedge, the tang is stamped Lloyd Su??????? (stamping goes off the top of the tang) & Walton, Philadelphia. No stampings on the reverse side of the tang. As I said, it was crusty when I got it. It got sanded from 220 down to 4500 grit no fewer than twice. I have an obscene amount of time in sanding this thing. Then it got the 3 compound passes on the buffing wheels to polish it out.


The scales are some particularly nice grained Cocobolo. I went with a natural oil finish instead of the epoxy resin on this set. Some of the wood grain is still visible but it does not bother me. The pins are 1/16 brass rod with brass over stainless washers. The wedge is marble wood and the blade has stainless thrust bearings.


The tip of the spike is slightly rolled from improper honing but not to bad considering this blade is a good 100 years old. The hone ware is relatively light. I honed it up last night and gave it the shave test this morning. All that work paid off. It is a very good shaving razor.
