My first full restore - Hope Cutlery Co.

I started by first cleaning/sanding razors while keeping them in the original scales, as I couldn't rescale. Then I got brave and unpinned a few scales and ordered some Microfasteners so I could clean the razors better and still put them back together. Well this past weekend I took a shot at peening and this is my first that I disassembled, cleaned, rescaled properly, then honed. It's now one of head shavers.

Razor is a nice Hope Cutlery that's just a hair more than 5/8". The first image is a project razor (Wm. Bingham) I got many months ago in my first auction lot. I post it because I used those scales for this restore. Second image is the blade unscaled. Third image is the complete "before" picture, followed by how it looks right now. Sorry for the image quality and unintentionally various backgrounds.

Now I still need to work on my sanding/polishing (read: need more patience) and looking at it now, I think I should have left a tad more rod to peen. Still, I'm happy with my first go. The razor looks much better now with black horn scales and the nickel rod and SS washers. Razor stays closed when I hold it by the scales upside down, and I'm not commenting on the balance. :)

Any questions/comments would be welcomed. I've learned so much from this forum and I know that there's plenty more!

Nice save, but I really do hope you didn't break the old scales while depinning :). Those were very nice too. Well done, mate!

Thanks -- I did keep those scales. I actually put them on a Shumate's Pacific on the same weekend.

Oh I know. I got hooked when I started -- I'm just slowly making my way up to the point where I can do full restorations. Next step is making my own scales.
