Boker "Pearl" razor w/Covered Tang in Midnight Acrylic

A Logical restore for our very own Logistics....

Every now an then, you just have to say WTF... and that is what Travis said the other night in chat... After I popped this Boker "Pearl" loose everything just kind of started falling apart...
First those old Boker Bakelite scales couldn't handle the rusted pins coming loose, then the MOP tang covers were cracked to pieces under the scales so they more or less crumbled off there...

So looking at this, we needed an idea, Travis came up with a good one:rofl2::rofl2: "Do whatever you want Glen" :D

So I took one day just to think about it and came up with this idea, why not use the Midnight acrylic that I loved on another Boker I did last year except carry it straight through to the covered tang too...

So first I cleaned up the razor, then using epoxy I glued on the very thin tang covers... At the same time I set up the scale blanks and let this all sit in the shop in the vice to dry....

Today I started sanding and shaping using my belt sander and a Dremel with a sanding sleeve on there... I made the scales and sanded the tang covers to fit.. I sanded the scales and the tang covers to 12k using micromesh and then some PlastX polish...

I used NiAg pins with SS and Brass washers and a matching acrylic wedge...

Anyway here is a fully restored 5/8 Spike point Boker "Pearl" razor with matching Midnight Acrylic Scales and Tang... Hope you like it Travis

Oh BTW the best part of this story is I should be able to hand deliver this one in Denver on Tuesday.... :y

This is one of the reasons I'm so proud to be sharing the workshop/gallery with the G brother. Beautiful work on the tang and perfect combo and finish with the scales. Love how it all flows together.

Ditto from Me, Lovely work Glen, I have a Boker Pearl with a barbers notch that I keep putting to the back of the pile, because you just know you're going to uncover a real can of worms when you start stripping it, So thank you Sir Glen, I am inspired.

You have really out done yourself! The best part is my favorite color is blue so this makes it so much better. I had never thought you would have done something like this, ever. WOW! Just WOW! The way it flows is amazing.

I can't wait to try this... maybe I'll just sit there and stare at it for a long time, then pick it up to shave just to set it back down and stare at it.

Since you are delivering it yourself, maybe I should stop and get one of the window stickers that reads "Caution: Baby on-board" for when I drive home.

I must say, I'd had a very similar idea floating around in the back of my mind about "re-doing" a covered tang razor.

But the work you have done on this is excellent! The bold patterning, the smooth seemlessness of the new tang covering, it's all just excellent stuff!

Absolutely AMAZING!!
I find myself wiping off the fingerprints all the time. I can't believe how well this razor turned out. Total perfection in craftsmanship, honing and color combination.

When I first got it on Saturday all I could do is sit there and stare at it. It really is that beautiful of a razor and how smooth the scales and tang felt. WOW!

Given there are no jimps on the tang I was afraid it might be too slick to handle... pffft... I can hold onto this razor very well and it appears the acrylic doesn't make it hard to handle when my fingers are a little wet.

Also... what did you do, Glen, break out the good hones like getting out the good whiskey when company comes over? WOW!! :dropjaw: My first shave was with 2 days of stubble and it glides so smooth it is unreal. So, I thought, why not try it with a weeks worth of growth and see what happens. This razor cut right through like my wedge does. One pass, WTG and that is all I felt was needed. Given how sharp this razor is I really don't need the kung-fu grip on the tang.

Now I see why gentlemen here like Boker so much. With how this razor turned out so amazing it would appear my razors will be going through a layoff. *hands a pink slip to my Dovo*

Glen, you have really out done yourself on this razor! My hat goes off to you on this project. I'm still at a loss of words on how it looks and flows so well with the tang, how lightweight it is, how sharp it is and how it glides so smooth. This razor is a true work of art and craftsmanship. Undoubtedly, this razor will be a benchmark for all my future honing and restores.

After seeing this, I'm going to reconsider those razors I pass on because of damaged covered tangs. That material you used is beautiful. I was planning to try my hand at wood scales first, but I've worked with acrylic before and always liked the way it handled. This razor is inspiring!

Where did you get the acrylic?
I was going to try these guys:
Masecraft Supply for knife making supplies, inlay materials, pool cue and pen making supplies.

Amazing!

Masecraft is a great source if you need stuff in 1/8 thicknes...

The acrylic that is on this razor is from www.woodpenpro.com
but you have to dig deep for the oversized 1x1x6 size It has to be 6 inch + length or it will be too short, trust me here the standard penblanks will not S T R E C H :)
If you can rip your own blanks you can get some different patterns by how you cut the blamks...

Found the items you are talking about. They ahve some really pretty acrylics! I didn't see the one you used though, or if I did, i missed it :p
