My first Livi, my blade design in Bergam damasks and buckeye burl
Well. I decided to get my first Livi a few months ago. Given the price point of a Livi I figured I would only get one or two so I wanted to get something special. Why not go all in and get a one off Bergam damasks blade. So I got to thinking about all the razors I have and what I like in them. Then I drew out my own blade and sent it off to Don to see what Mastro could do with it. The blade arrived a few weeks ago.
I gave the blade a humped tang with a thumb notch. I had the raised hump above the thumb notch cross hatched for a good grip. The tail is extended with a sculpted ridge in the middle, think if it as a finger notch. I like Spanish points but wanted something a bit more unique so I exaggerated the tip and extended it past the spine. The spine is cross hatched with coves ground in either side separating the X's.
I wanted to make my own scales, in part because I like my scales better and to save a few $$. I had something special in mind. I had some particularly special buckeye burl. I exaggerated the sway in the scales to expose as much of the blade as I could. As awesome as the wood is, the Bergam damasks is the high point of this razor. The scales were cut thicker than I usually make them to counter the heft of the big blade. They got two separate coats of high gloss epoxy resin. The finish is so deep, it looks like you could swim in the finish.
So, here she is. I am quite happy with it. My first Livi of my own blade design and my scales. Mastro and Don did a super job. Now I have to hone it so I can try out this steel.
FYI, when I get time, I am turning a matching 26mm silvertip from the same buckeye burl. Should make a very nice set.
