Buddel silversteel with mammoth ivory

This is a very special razor for me. It´s the first custom order, that explicit was ordere as an full hollow ground razor. So I tried to make this as an freehand grinding at my beltsander. It is not so perfect like a wacker or TI, but I´m quite proud on my work. Perhaps in the future I can do the hollow ground even better.
The other problem was, my hardening oven was misaligned at the first hardening, so that I dont reached the hardening temperatur. I not noticed this first, and grounded the blade ready. After that I noticed, that the razor not hold an edge. After sharpening the first strokes with the shave was ok and then it lost it´s sharpness. So I went in the heat treatment shop and they tested the hardness for me - nothing http://www.shaveready.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
So I decided to harden the blade a second time. The problem was, that the blade was already to thin for that process. The chance, that the blade will warped was really high. But I had a lot of luck and the blade was still straight after the hardening.
The handle is from full mammoth ivory with an wedge from translucent horn. Blade size is 7/8.

What an amazing razor. Incredible work. It looks like it would fit perfectly in your hand. I really like the shape of the tang.

That's beautiful! I know it's an original piece, but it does have something about the blade that's reminiscent of a DePews.

Very, very nice, and I like the unusual shape. It somehow reminds me of the Japanese Feather razors, not necessarily the shape itself, but as an example of a non-traditional design that really works and would be functional.

The hollow grind is amazing. Good job on redoing the heat-treatment. A lot of times you can get away with that if the steel is relatively stress-free and the grind is even.

Would you be willing to start a thread in The Forge describing how you did the hollow grind? I'd like to learn how to do that; all of mine have been done at the radius of whatever wheel I was using.

What a beautifully shaped blade, it just flows perfectly on it's own and the scales compliment it perfectly. Wow!

I will thinking about it. I have to do some photos and sketches first. Also I have to think, how I made it. Mostly I working only with my feeling and do not make great plans before it. And at least, it´s my first really attempt. So it is still in process and I don´t want, that someone think I´m the King of hollow grounding - I´m not. A wacker or TI hollow ground will be actually much more better than my bungling.

I wouldn't call that bungling, my friend. :) TI and (probably) Whacker have access to a lot of equipment that those of us who make blades by hand don't have. Imagine being able to grind both sides of your blade at the same time with high-grit stones, while not having to worry about heat because of a constant flow of water running over the blade. That's heaven compared to freehanding it on a belt grinder. :)

A tutorial from your perspective would be great because you're learning and still have to think the process through; your actions aren't yet automatic. Once somebody gets good at something they tend to internalize a lot of the key information, and then it's harder to describe what you're doing. It becomes instinctual.

Regardless, excellent work.

When I retire I would love to produce that type of work.

I like it too. Best of all is the story that comes with it. The blade survived a trial by fire, it looks good, it is definitely handmade, it has character and fine materials.
