Straight razor case/box made from recycled flooring

I had a bunch of scrap pieces of Pilang (Burmese Walnut) saved from when we had hardwood floors put in our house. I saved them from the installers throwing them out, knowing I'd use them when I had time to haul out my tools and set up in my carport to do some woodworking.

Well my new straight razor hobby has pushed me to finally take action and so I built a case to store straight razors. As you can see from the pictures I left the inside of the case raw and unfinished. I need to clean it up somewhat on the inside (scrape glue squeeze out and give it a coat of tung oil to protect it) but I plan to leave it rough to show the recycled nature of the project. You can still see the stamps from the flooring manufacturer in Canada in the inside.

The outside is finished with homemade orange shellac of various cuts, and good quality paste wax. The only thing I'm not happy with yet is my installation of the lid with the small piano hinge, it's not quite straight and not sitting right, but I'll fix it!

If I could figure out a way to make a living making these all day I surely would. :)

Bamboo would be cool, I've never used bamboo before, figuring out a nice finish for it would be fun.

I haven't worked with bamboo yet, but think that I will use a satin laquer for my first finish with it. If it's scales, will probably use CA. I keep on looking back at the pic and notice more and more details that I like, sure looks good.

Love the box man...And, I've been wasting my $$ on Thiers Issard Boxes. Can you make them horizontal rather than vertical? With glass display?

Man, you should go into production and find a distribution channel...I am certain they will be popular.

Sure it would be easy to use glass. You would need a much less figured wood for a horizontal display case, to put the attention on the nice razors.

It would be pretty hard for me to go into mass production hah! I live in a half duplex, without a garage. I did all this work in my carport (basically my driveway) using one of those collapsing workmates for a bench and my junky portable table saw. I don't think my neighbours would be too happy if I made a regular thing of it hehe.

Very nice box. I wish I had the skill to make myself one like it...

By the way, I used to have a vintage box like that, and I found it was helpful to put some padding inside the lid in order to hold the razors in place (sort of grab the tails) so they didn't "clink" around, but my box was small and I carried it around a bit. May not matter for a big one like yours.

It's meant to be stationary so it won't need padding. I was thinking about making a mesh net to hold some of that silica stuff that ships with electronics to absorb moisture.

Hmmm...best way would be to recruit the neighbors in this endeavor :rofl2:.

In all seriousness...you can probably outsource the manufacturing to China or something (some have minimums that need to be met, but with demand for something like this, you will not have problems meeting it). Probably, the margin can be decent on something like this too (have it made for $10-15 a box and sell it for >$60...I just made those numbers up)

I'd be your first customer :).
