Heirloom Sears Vintage Restore, not working ?????

Now I finished this Vintage style restore up a few hours ago and got the pics taken...

The Razor is stamped Sears "Self Honing" Pat. no 692324
and on the top of the spine Sears 1865..

I polished it up, and cleaned it up, and took it back to as close to original as I could manage... It has a rather unique grind I have only seen on a few razors...

Here is the problem guys, it obviously doesn't work, I took the pics and then went back out to the shop to finish more razors.. I came back in after 3 good hours and checked the razor... Well heck nothing happened, I even left it sitting on top of the Coticule but still nothing ... It has definitely not honed itself at all, not even a little bit... I looked for some kind of switch, but again nothing !!!!
I am just not sure how this razor is supposed to work... Does any one have one of these that works that could give me some tips on how to get the self-honing option turned on????

If worse comes to worse I guess I can hone it the old fashioned way :( but I sure would like to get it working :) :)

Nice work on making it look new again! Do you think the scales had the notches at the tang originally, or was that perhaps an owner modification?

As to the self honing: I think you might need to lay it flat on the stone. If that doesn't work, try moving it on the stone a bit, like in sort of an x-pattern.

I studied mechanical engineering along with economics in undergrad, why don't you ship that bad boy out my way and I'll see if I can't figure it out for you!:banghead:

It is from Sears, take it back and tell them it's defective and you want an exchange for a working one!!!

That looks fantastic! :bow Now all I have to do is wait patiently for the mail to arrive. I look forward to my first shave with it. Glen, thank-you so much for bringing this razor back to life even if the "self-honing" feature is inoperative. :)

As far as I know the scale notches are original and uniformly cut. The razor was given to me from my father-in-law and it had belonged to his grandfather. Maybe his grandfather modified them, but it doesn't appear to be the case.

Great looking razor. Maybe it needs new batteries for the self honing feature to work and I thought the Mach 3 was the first battery powered bladed razor.

The self honing feature will work if you give it to your kids.

My dad had a Garage Door Opener for 18 years......then I moved out.

You have to activate the service agreement with Sears - at which point you send them the razor, they send it to this guy near Sandpoint, ID, and you get it back with a great edge. What could be more simple?

You're funny Glen. My grandson knows why it didn't hone itself. Did you say "please"? If it's a famale razor, maybe you have to buy it a dress first.
