NY Thistle Cut co 6/8 Vinatge Restore

This one is all mine, I am a big fan of Thistle razors anyway, but when I saw a 6/8 with no visible hone wear I was all over it...

Those were the good points now let me tell ya the bad

I won the Razor for $12.50
The %^&%^$##*& E-bay seller charged 8.84 for shipping
and I even wrote her a note warning her about overcharging for shipping would not bode well for her feedback... Still debating on the feedback

The spine and tang were pretty bad with rust but the blade was near perfect...

I popped the single pin scales and started buffing, not to bad actually other then between the rust and the light tang stamp I barely kept the Markers Mark very faintly on there...

I polished up the scales again and took the finish to only a Satin glow that I like, instead of the mirror that it originally was.. Yes they do come mirror finished from the factory, even full hollows... I read that "No full hollows were originally mirrored" on another forum and laughed my butt off... Anyway, after all the polishing on the scales and the blade this is what she looks like now...

I set a bevel on a King 1k and ran the Shapton GS 1-2-4-6-8-16-30 using the light slurry technique all the way through until the 30k, then switched to the 3-2-1 finish on that stone I like so much...

I posted in the SOTD about the shave :)

That is one sweet restore and razor. I wouldn't expect less coming from my G Brother. Excellent work G and another one saved.

The Shapton 30k often times can be to much of a good thing...
Back in 2009 at the NC meet we were all sitting around honing, and I was on the Shaptons... Don from SRD was there, and we were talking and he said he used some spine leading laps on the 30k and it seemed to work out for him...
For the next few months I played around with different finishing tehniques on the 30k what I finally came up with and what gets me the most consistent results off this stone is..
Clean water, 3 super light edge leading X strokes, then 2 super light spine leading X strokes, then 1 final edge leading X stroke as light as a feather...
Strop and shave :)

I saw it when perusing ebay recently and wondered if you'll pick it up :)
I think you should leave correct feedback - certainly low score on the shipping charges, and I'd write it in the feedback itself too.
I've charged that much for shipping, but those were several hundred dollar razors, so the insurance makes it that expensive to ship.

I pickd up a Thistle cut yesterday from a local vendor in Toronto. It's fully restored (mirror finish) and honed shaved ready. Shaves well to it's like yours with a little notch at the end of the blade. Not knowing too much would you think $60 is a good buy?

You read way too much into that :)

They are called a Barber's Notch only on the forums... Nobody has ever found any Vintage reference to them the being called anything other than a Hollow Point or Hollow Notch.. So no, at this point in our current info, that does not mean it is or is not a barber's razor...

Now for Thistle Cut Co. yes the "Hollow Notch" is a bit more rare then the Spike points... Thistles are not all that common to begin with... I have some info on the company at home...They were not in business all that long...
I have a true love of all the NY razors , they take a very fine edge, and they hold it... Now the best news is that you can still buy them at a decent price....

Cool thanks for all the info...i just started straight shaving 3 months ago and this is my third razor...I'm looking at razors not only as shaving equipment but pieces of antique art...sometimes I just look at them an I don't even shave.:)

No, they are actually two sides, but back then they "welded" the Celluloid together, I have some ideas on how they did it, but I have never been able to reproduce it, YET...

Perhaps it was as simple as using a liquid Celluloid "paste" to hold it together

Thanks for the info. Al the time I've spent looking at these forums, i don't recall ever seeing scales like that. I would imagine that makes them a little more difficult to work on. Again, beautiful.

Re the cell welding. I think Charlie (Spazola) once mentioned using acetone to weld some celluloid but thas'all I know.

Yes I have used the Acetone to melt them to remove Inlays and I have tried it for repairs -But- it is not universal it is rather weird that on some celluloid it works rather well, but on others it doesn't work at all.. I know the Neil Miller has done a ton of research on the old stuff and he was saying that there are different formulas and I would whole heartedly agree there...

I'd bet you have to dissolve some celluloid in the acetone to make a kind of glue but then of course the formula of the particular celluloid may be a deciding factor too.
