I'm doing 4-5 razors in different steels.
Max has agreed to hone and test them. I will withhold which steel is used until after the testing.
I've seen razors made from O-1, 1095, 52100, cpm 154, and damascus made from a variety of steels.
I plan on using 4 steels that are different than these that differ in allow content.
Chime in if you have a favorite steel for razors.

Have you ever used 100CrMn6, its a bit tougher than regular 52100? I used to work for a large bearing manufacturer and we used only those two steels for every bearing we made.
I love your work, Damascus is one of the most pleasing materials on earth, both from a visual and from an engineering standpoint.

Y'know I've had razors with 01, 52100, 1095, ATS-34, S30-V and of course 440C. A number of Damascus blades from Williams, Livi, Chandler, Zowada and Harner. Given the same grind I have a hard time telling them apart on the face although I can notice a difference on the hones. Nice looking blade you did there.
What's the chemical make up of the 100CrMn6?

52100 is nearly identical to 100Cr6, 100CrMn6 includes Manganese into the mix.
1% Carbon
0.6% Silicon
1.1% Manganese
1.5%Chromium
Good stuff, same hardenability as 52100 but tougher. We did not have to really futz with process parameters when grinding it, but I know we used it in heavier duty bearing applications.

I have favourite steel qualities rather than a favourite steel. I like one that takes a high HRC without being chippy & takes a wicked sharp, durable & comfortable shaving edge....but that may have a lot to do with the guys wielding the hammer & doing the heat treat as well as the kind of steel.

I'm not an expert on steel, so I cannot contribute anything to that, but I will say this. Again:
You have a very good sense of aesthetics and design!
If the razors you have been kind enough to show us lately shaves anything near as good as they look, you are looking at a bright future indeed;)
