quality wilber restore question

hello all
I am in the middle of a restoration of a Chicago Wilbert cutlery straight that has a plastic guard on the tang, but the original is cracked on one side and the makers mark is almost worn off on the other, anyone know where i can get a replacement, even an old parts razor would be fine. i was just gonna leave the original parts on as is, but any other suggestions would be nice. you cant see it in the picture but theres a crack where the pin near the blade is and i cant remove it to clean the rust without making it worse. thanks for your time. Don't see how you'd find a direct match replacement. Hard to tell by the image what type material those covers are made with currently. Unless it was precious, I would replace with custom made. Should be easy enough to make replacements. You could make from just about anything. Horn, acrylic, celluloid, mother of pearl. Pretty much any direction you can think of.

The only hard part will be to reattach to the blade.

You can also just rip it all down and start again, as under those covered tangs is pretty nasty..

really nice Glen, where do you get scale material like that, all i was able to get were some plain basic colored acrylic, i was gonna use yellow for this one. i have some nice looking wood material, but i don't want to use it for this particular piece.

that was a very helpful post i had looked around before, but i couldn't figure out the gauge of the wire. this is my third restore but my first with a covered tang and i was completely lost.
