Cattaraugus - Bellied 5/8

I bought this one a while back on eBay because I'd seen very few such radical grinds. I don't know what the 1902 patent stamped on the tang refers to so if anyone can enlighten me ,thanx in advance.
As can be seen from the remaining devil's spit this one was in a bad way.
The scales were oxidised bakelite & promptly cracked with the first tap on the pivot pin. Gave me a chance to use a new smokey, black acrylic.
Wedge is original celluloid & the original brass thrust washers were cleaned & replaced. NiAg pins over the new small washers we all love.
Should be an interesting shave when honed up. Never met a Little Valley razor I didn't like :)

That is a very interesting and pronounced grind...Look at the belly at the edge. I love it :tu. Nice job on the restore :bow

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that was the date of the patent for that particular type of grind. It's not the normal belly I see on many razors.

Thanx Dylan . I guessed maybe that was it. Early 1900's was when WR Case split from Cattaraugus too. Maybe the Champlins wanted to keep the design to themselves ? I dunno.

That has to be the clearest picture of a bellied razor that I've seen, a beautiful razor and a great restore.

It was for the grind as thought by others.

Your scales are amazing. The look of the "smoke" and the patina on the blade go really nicely together.

Way cool Oz I just did a Geneva 6/8 with the exact same grind :) they give an interesting shave, handles like a Full Hollow yet sounds and cuts more like a 1/2 Hollow, at least that was my impression.. let us know what you think when you shave her,, nice job on bringing her back :tu

Thanx, Sounds like the best of both worlds hehe. Will have a few to hone by the weekend.

Lovely, Oz. I've also not touched a Cattaraugus that didn't perform with the best of its kind. Every time I see one, I think "Green Lizard" with was a model line for them that included barber hones (have one).

Scales are wonderful. I cringed when you told about originals cracking. 'Sorry for the extra work, but the result is undoubtedly superior.

Ya know that was the 10th restore in the last few weeks & all the other scales held together, even the ivory Iwasaki. Life has a way of keeping us humble hehe.

Sweet looking blade Oz. I like the look of that acrylic too, and I'm sure the photos dont do it justice either.

Well, I tested this baby last night & it's a keeper. Glen's description of the Full & 1/2 Hollow hybrid is pretty spot on. Really nice handling & somewhat stiff. Keeness was as expected:D ~~ Me likey.

So now we have an explanation of the Hamburg grind from the patent description. Was this patent the origin of the current, bi-concave, full hollow grind? It is interesting that the diagram in the patent is the same as what Arthur Boone uses in his Razor Central document.
