I wanna show ya' somethin...a Scalloped Beauty

This is one that I had finished a while back (6 months or so), but it was naked. I have come to decide that I would rather work with steel making blades than another media making scales. The steel is 1095 that I made with rather affordable tools that pretty much anyone could afford: Ryobi 4x36 sander from a big box lumber store, a Sears wet grinder, cheap high speed buffer, lots of sandpaper, & lots of time. I'm in the process of building a 2x72 grinder quite similar to Brad's...just have a few parts to go. The scales are black horn.

Shooter, that's seriously beautiful. 'Hard to imagine the tooling would be within reach of the avg. guy. You have a background in metal work?

However you did this, its lovely. Very big grats.

Stunning looking blade.

The spine work is wonderful but what I'm really drawn to the nice huge notch near the heal. Since it's pretty much center blade, it's neat how my focal point is centered there, enjoying all else around it

My first dance with it was wonderful. I taped the spine until I had a good bevel, then honed it normal on the Shapton GS's through 8K & finished on a Y/G Escher I got from Sham about a year ago. It was a wonderful shave. The weight and it being at least 1/4 wedge really gave a squeegee effect. Only had time for two passes and I had a nice & smooth shave.

I really don't have any background in anything artistic other than a drafting class in college. I didn't even have a plan on what I wanted except for a 8/8 blade & long monkey tail. It just came together as I was grinding steel. MikeBlue did a wonderful job on the heat treatment. Only thing I had to do was narrow the ball at the monkey tail when fitting the scales. With a long tail like that, you can't put in a third pin to open up the scales as the blade will come into contact with it.

What I want to know from you guys who work with horn, how do you get that final sheen on it. It's close, but not glossy & shows a bit of the grain in the horn. I finished it on 2K sandpaper, then took it to the buffer, but it didn't quite give me the shine I was looking for. Any suggestions? A coat of Renaissance was helped...but not quite there.

Please remember that all of the razors I have made to date have been made with roughly $200 worth of tools. You don't have to have all of the fancy tools to be creative. The scales were rough cut with a dremel and finished with sanding blocks and sandpaper, followed by buffing them. I do have a real grinder in the works, but it's not that it's necessary...it will just make it easier for me to make what I want & much quicker.

Very nice work and attractive design. :tu :tu I'm not surprised that the 1095 gave a good shave. Keep them coming.
