There's none of the porosity I'd expect from bone, but I'm far from an expert and haven't handled a lot of bone scales that weren't relatively new.
The scales are a bit thicker than other ivory scales I've seen which exagertes the density somewhat, but it is defintely less translucent that the two other ivory scaled razors I currently have in my possession (both from a similiar date as well) which I'm 100% sure are elephant ivory.
The graining does curve back on itself but I guess this may just be a function of the area it was cut from. I suppose it could also be whale tooth:shrug: but I've never handled this material so am not in a position to make a comparison.
I'll have a go at getting a better photograph of the scales.
