Thiers Issard with Mother of Pearl scales

Here is a 5/8 Thiers Issard in white Mother of Pearl, I just completed.

Scales are white MOP shell sandwiched between Toxic Green G10 liners and clear epoxy resin. So it's G10, white epoxy resin, shell, clear epoxy resin. Scales shaped similar to the popular Thiers Issard style. White Ivory G10 wedge with domed stainless washers and Nickle Silver rod to hold together.

Thank you, unknowingly you provided a complement that you may not be aware of. There are 3 MOP panels on each side. Cut to the direction of the MOP grain, and similar to angle of the scales triangle tips. I just went back to my pictures to find a shot that clearly shows the seams. Can't really find one. Maybe it's the poor lighting the pictures where taken in, but as I twirl this razor in my hand, they really are a nice tight seam.

I've been busy on this, and another project, trying to finish in time to get them back home enough time before Christmas. Now that getting caught up, can start replying to emails from some good friends, lol. Happy Holidays all.

Lovely work. The lines of the scales suite the blade beautifully when closed.
And great work joining the MOP, cant see any joins from here.

Very nicely done. MOP is one of my favorite scales. Really first class.

Those are REAL purty. If it were mine to design I might have chosen different than green liners, but that is just me. But WOW that is perhaps one of the most beautifully scaled razors I have seen. Great work and gives me something to dream about (both because of the skill and the final result).

I'm with coachshaller in that I think these are one of the most beautiful scaled razors. I'm a sucker for mother-of-pearl. I think white cars are boring (I have two), but I think a pearl-white car is very cool looking, like the difference between red and candy-apple red.

Your pictures are of a work of art. Very fine job. I am downright envious.

FYI, pic one I'm using for wallpaper on my computer at work. It replaces a cool picture of Saturn.

I have looked several times since. I still cannot find a suspected seam! Fit and Finish as well as panel placement have rendered a one piece look. Better than ever! I feel there is probably some translucent qualities to the shell which is enhanced by the liners. I would think reds, blues and greens bring out the colors in the pearl, much as a basecoat. This green worked fantastic. Great work, Walt!

Thank you everyone for the positive comments. This was lots of fun to put together. Almost as much fun to show it, haha. Shell is probably my favorite look for scales. I know for others, might be their least favorite. That's part of what makes all this fun. Something for everyone.

Many comments about the Toxic Green both pro and some con. I think the color choice is sort of like MOP for razor scales. People like it, or don't, but few are of a middle ground. Hard to put in words why, but I like that.

I rescaled this razor for someone else. Originally did red liners. Final pinning, blade wasn't centering as desired. Twisting the razor, tapping the pivot pin, I struck the scales. Cracked the MOP directly under the pin on one side. Certain still strong. It would be similar to an extra panel seam, between the epoxy resin layers, but didn't look perfect, so re-made the scales.

Now over the heart break, I made 6 different pair of slabs. Below is a few of them waiting for another clear coat.

Color combos on different color liners (white, red, toxic green, black) with different colors of Mother of Pearl (white, gold, white with gold swirls and white/gold panels). I showed these to the owner, and the Toxic Green was chosen. So far it's my favorite color combo. I like how the hue is similar to the pinks and aqua that shows at some angels.

It was also asked how long it takes. As far as that, I don't really track that. If I did, it stop me from doing them, lol.

I suspect it takes twice as long to make the slabs, as shaping and doing a final clear coat. So if making wood scales, that get epoxy resin coat, however long it takes you to shape and coat a set of wood scales, multiple by three.

Also thanks for noticing the seams. To have grain direction close on each panel, I used six MOP pieces,as you can see below.

I cut from similar position on each raw piece. After getting edges of panels completely flat, where they are to meet. Recently I added a step to my process, that I now tape the panels together. Tape applied show side. This I do to make sure they don't float and shift on the layer of epoxy on the liners.
